Diagnosis: Liver Transplant

My husband had progressive liver cancer. The only hope was a liver transplant. From the first meeting, I knew that God had led us to Baskent University Hospital and Professor Haberal. Doctors, nurses, coordinators, registrars, cleaners, cafeteria workers – simply everyone we interacted with treated us like family. I am very grateful to everyone who had any contact with us. My now healthy husband is two years post-transplant. My gratitude to God and all the doctors who saved his life.

For which diseases is transplantation indicated?

Several pathological processes in the liver are identified that, even with ongoing conservative treatment, steadily progress and lead to chronic liver failure:

  • Cirrhosis.
  • Liver cancer, where radical tumor removal is only possible along with the organ.
  • A number of metabolic disorders, such as cystic fibrosis, hemochromatosis, Wilson’s disease.
  • Viral hepatitis B, C, and B+D leading to cirrhosis.
Who can be a donor?

The most optimal option is considered to be living-related donation, provided there is blood group compatibility. A lobe or segment of a liver lobe taken from a blood relative of the patient (parents, siblings, children) engrafts with the lowest risk of rejection and other complications. Liver tissue has an increased capacity for regeneration, so the donor’s organ quickly restores its original shape and size.

Features of Liver Transplantation in India

In India, liver transplantation can be performed from both living and deceased donors. A healthy person aged 18 to 45, who is not necessarily blood-related to the recipient, can become a donor.

Before the operation, a number of formalities related to document processing will need to be observed:

  • The donor and recipient must arrive in India on a medical visa.
  • Documents confirming kinship, such as a birth certificate, must be provided. A passport, driver’s license, and bank account information may be required to document the identity and place of residence of the prospective donor.
  • Consent for organ donation must be given by the donor’s next of kin at a meeting of the Transplantation Committee. This may be a spouse, parents, or half-siblings.
  • Documents confirming kinship between the donor and recipient are certified at the country’s embassy in Delhi. The choice of donor must be approved by an authorized government committee.

Documenting Transplantation in Turkey

According to the rules of the Ministry of Health of Turkey, an organ donor can only be a living person aged 18 to 50 who has no known diseases and has not undergone surgery during their lifetime. Organ donation is permitted only from those who are related to the recipient up to the 4th degree (fourth degree of kinship through a great-great-grandparent).

Obtaining permission for transplantation includes confirmation of kinship by the Consulate. The necessary documents for this are submitted in English or Turkish.

How much will the surgery cost?

Typically, when discussing the cost of a liver transplant, the price of a standard medical services package is indicated. It includes:

  • Doctor’s consultation upon hospital admission.
  • Standard set of examinations for donor and recipient.
  • Standard medication prescriptions necessary for the donor and recipient during preparation for surgery, during the surgical intervention, and in the postoperative period.
  • Performing the surgery.
  • The patient with a transplanted liver staying in the intensive care unit for 5 days, in a surgical ward for 10 days, and the patient who donated part of the organ for transplant staying in a hospital ward for 10 days.

The final price of a liver transplant can be affected by:

  • Additional days spent in the intensive care unit or hospital.
  • Examination of a second and subsequent donors if the first potential donor is not suitable. An additional payment of approximately 2-2.5 thousand US dollars will be required for a set of instrumental and laboratory tests for 1 person.
  • Consultations with narrow specialists and additional examinations if the patient has other health problems not related to liver pathology.
  • Additional inpatient treatment required for preparation for liver transplant in cirrhosis and other diseases (plasmapheresis, hemofiltration, blood transfusion, etc.).
The cost of transplantation in Turkey is 60,000 USD, in India 28,500 USD.

When planning a trip to the clinic, it is possible to negotiate for discounts. Also, a number of charitable foundations that actively cooperate with Experts Medical provide assistance with treatment payments.
