About clinic

Charite Clinic in Berlin is the most famous multidisciplinary hospital in Germany. It is one of the oldest and largest university clinics in Europe. Charité Clinic is the clinical base of the medical faculties of the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Free University of Berlin.

In the German Focus magazine "Germany's best hospitals," the Charité has been ranked number one for 11 times.

Charité Clinic is a major medical and scientific center of international importance, where scientists and physicians research and apply advanced and innovative methods of diagnosis and treatment in many fields of medicine. Priority areas include:

  • cardiology;
  • neurology;
  • oncology;
  • regenerative therapy;
  • rare diseases and genetics;
  • infections, inflammatory diseases, and immunology.

World level of Charité Clinics

More than half of all German Nobel laureates in medicine and the natural sciences worked at the Charité. As well as the world-famous physiologist Hermann Gemholtz, surgeon Theodor Billroth, therapist Ludwig Traube, and many other outstanding doctors. Now, 307 medical professors treat patients here.

The prestigious international rating of Newsweek magazine also confirms the world-level clinic. For several years, Charité Clinic has been ranked among the top ten best clinics in the world.

Charité provides highly specialized services in all areas of medicine. Charité Clinics occupy four separate campuses (complexes), with over 100 departments and clinics, as well as 17 interdisciplinary and highly specialized centers. All divisions are equipped to meet world standards.

All Charité centers practice an interdisciplinary approach with the participation of leading specialists in various fields of diagnosis and treatment. It also applies the principles of personalized medicine. Many patients pass through all the centers, so much experience has been gained in treating diseases, including rare ones.

What do international patients treat at Charité Clinic?

All medical services are available to foreign patients, from certain types of high-tech diagnostics to CyberKnife and proton therapy. Charité provides medical care to adults and children from many countries worldwide in complex and advanced cases.

Most often, foreign patients are accepted in the:

  • German Heart Center Charité (DHZC);
  • Interdisciplinary Oncology Center;
  • Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery and Orthopedics;
  • Clinic of Neurosurgery and Spinal Diseases;
  • Center for Neurology and Treatment of Rare Neurological Diseases;
  • all pediatric clinics, including oncology and hematology;
  • Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery;
  • Institute of Neuroradiology;
  • Department of Nuclear Medicine;
  • Center for Rare Diseases;
  • gynecological and urological departments.

Charité Clinic has created comfortable conditions for foreigners to stay.

Innovative treatment for valvular heart disease at DHZC

Every year, more than 600 non-surgical procedures for heart valve diseases are performed at the most significant German Heart Center Charité (DHZC):

  • transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI);
  • transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR);
  • transcatheter tricuspid valve intervention (TTVI).

According to the clinic, the success rate for the procedures is more than 95%. Thanks to the world-class cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology at DHZC, these procedures are performed on patients with both heart transplantations and artificial hearts. Specialized procedures such as a heart-lung machine's percutaneous (transcatheter) connection are also available. These interventions save patients who have contraindications for cardiac surgery.

Proton therapy for eye cancer at Charité

Proton therapy for ocular melanoma has been carried out at the Charité Interdisciplinary Oncology Center in cooperation with the Helmholtz Center Berlin (HZB) since 1998. The treatment usually requires four radiation sessions, which the patient receives over a week in a treatment room at HZB. According to the clinic, eye cancer is cured in 96% of patients. In most cases, not only the eye is preserved, but also the vision.

Non-surgical treatment of uterine fibroids at Charité

In the Gynecological Cancer Center, doctors use an innovative technique to treat uterine fibroids, an alternative to surgical intervention. MRI-guided focused ultrasound ablation (MRI FUS) is an outpatient procedure performed on an MRI table without incisions or anesthesia. The doctor visualizes the fibroids in the uterus using MRI and remotely sends a focused ultrasound to it. This effect heats the fibroids and causes irreversible changes in the tumor without affecting healthy tissues. A session of ultrasonic ablation takes from 3 to 4 hours.

The fibroids treated with ultrasound are partially or entirely destroyed within a few months. Six months after treatment, it is recommended to undergo a follow-up examination. Research shows that MRI FUS can reduce large fibroids by 40%.

If you want to be treated in this clinic, leave a request on the Experts Medical website. The medical coordinator will take full responsibility for organizing the trip to the Charité and provide support during the stay.

What are the most requested procedures among international patients at Charité Hospital?

Endoprosthetics of joints in the ChariteThe Charité Hospital provides diagnostics and treatment in all areas of medicine. However, the following procedures are prevalent among foreign patients:

  • Joint endoprosthetics. This operation replaces a damaged joint with an artificial implant that restores function and improves the patient’s quality of life. Doctors in Charité perform endoprosthetics of the hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow joints.
  • Bone marrow transplant. This is a procedure for transplanting healthy bone marrow stem cells from a donor to a recipient. The procedure is carried out for blood and immune system diseases. Doctors in Charité use allogeneic and autologous bone marrow transplants.
  • Cancer treatment. This is a set of measures to combat malignant tumours of various organs and tissues. Charité uses modern methods of cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy with the latest generation of cytostatics, molecular targeted therapy, hormone therapy, surgical removal of the tumour, and others.
  • Treatment of neurological diseases. The Charité Hospital treats diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and stroke.
  • Treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The clinic performs procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting, stent implantation, installation of artificial heart valves, and others.
What are the advantages of cancer treatment at the Charité?

Targeted therapy at the ChariteThe medical centre has a Cancer Center (Charité Comprehensive Cancer Center), which brings together more than 40 clinics and institutes specializing in various types of cancer.

The Charitéclinic uses innovative methods of cancer treatment, such as:

  • Immunotherapy is a promising area in oncology. It aims to activate the immune system to fight cancer cells. Immune therapy is effective in various types of cancer, such as lung cancer, melanoma, stomach cancer, and kidney cancer.
  • Targeted therapy is a drug treatment method based on targeted action on molecular targets (targets) that play a key role in tumour development and growth. These can be tyrosine kinase inhibitors, mitogen-activated kinase protein (MAP kinase) inhibitors, or antibodies that block certain signalling molecules.
  • Proton therapy uses high-energy protons to destroy malignant tumours in the body. Using proton therapy allows doctors to accurately control the location, depth, and intensity of radiation exposure to cancer cells. This helps prevent damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Molecular research uses stem cells to repair damaged tissue and replace tumour cells.

These methods allow you to affect the tumour more accurately and effectively, minimizing side effects and increasing the chances of a cure.

The Charité Oncology Center conducts scientific research and clinical trials of new drugs and technologies for cancer treatment. Patients suffering from oncological diseases may participate in studies if indicated. The use of experimental therapy offers hope to patients in the advanced stages of cancer.

Which diseases are treated in the neurosurgical department of the Charité hospital?

treatment in the neurosurgical department of the Charite hospitalThe neurosurgical department of the Charite Medical Center is equipped with the most modern equipment for diagnosing and treating various diseases of the nervous system. The department uses microsurgery, endoscopy, neuronavigation, neuromodulation, and stereotaxic radiosurgery.

Specialists of the neurosurgical department annually perform more than 4,000 operations on the brain and spinal cord. More than 1000 operations on the peripheral nervous system are also carried out.

In the neurosurgical department of the Charité hospital, various diseases of the nervous system are treated, such as:

  • tumours of the brain and spinal cord: pituitary adenoma, astrocytoma, hemangioma, glioblastoma, glioma, cyst, craniopharyngioma, medulloblastoma, meningioma, neurinoma, neuroblastoma and others;
  • vascular anomalies: aortic aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, cavernous angioma;
  • epilepsy and movement disorders: Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and others;
  • pain syndromes: trigeminal neuralgia, post-traumatic neuropathy;
  • injuries and lesions of the spine and spinal cord: intracranial hematoma, hydrocephalus, craniostenosis, Arnold-Chiari syndrome, spina bifida, spinal stenosis;
  • peripheral nervous diseases: carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome.

The department regularly researches to develop new surgical treatment methods for the nervous system.

The research team is developing a new LSI imaging technique. With its help, doctors can monitor changes in cerebral blood flow in real time. This method will be used in the treatment of ischemic stroke and its consequences.

What are the features of cardiovascular disease treatment at Charité Hospital?

Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases at Scharite Hospital

The Charité University Hospital has received a quality certificate from the German Society of Cardiology (DGK). This ensures that the treatment, diagnosis, and care of patients with pathologies of the heart and blood vessels will be carried out at a high level.

The Scharite Department of Cardiology doctors work closely with the Departments of Cardiac Surgery and Angiology, providing a comprehensive approach to each patient. The department has four diagnostic laboratories equipped with a digital biplane angiography system. These modern devices provide accurate diagnoses of diseases of the cardiovascular system.

For the treatment of the heart and blood vessels, the Charité clinic uses effective, innovative methods, such as:

  • Coronary artery bypass grafting. This is surgery to create a bypass for blood flow around narrowed or blocked coronary arteries that feed the heart. For this, the patient’s own veins or arteries are used.
  • Stent implantation. A procedure to insert a thin metal frame (stent) into an artery’s narrow or blocked area to widen it and improve blood flow to the heart.
  • Installation of artificial heart valves. Surgery to replace damaged or defective heart valves with artificial implants that allow normal blood flow through the heart.
  • Transcatheter intervention on the mitral valve (TMVR). This is a minimally invasive procedure to correct mitral valve insufficiency (blood flow from the left ventricle into the left atrium) using a special device that fixes the valve leaflets.
  • Cardioversion. This procedure restores the heart’s normal rhythm in atrial fibrillation (improper and rapid contraction of the atria) using an electrical discharge or drugs.
Why is the general surgery department of the Charité Hospital considered one of the best in Europe?

robotic surgeryThe surgical department at the Charité Medical Center specializes in treating various diseases of the rectum, stomach, liver, and oesophagus.

General surgeons also treat inflammatory diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The specialists of this department perform minimally invasive operations using advanced methods, including laparoscopy and the Da Vinci robotic system. These innovative techniques allow procedures to be performed with minimal trauma to patients.

The Charité Hospital uses modern medical equipment and technologies for operations, such as:

  • Laparoscopy. A method of surgical intervention in which the operation is performed through small incisions in the abdominal cavity using special instruments and a video camera.
  • Endoscopy. A diagnostic and treatment method in which a flexible tubular device (endoscope) with an optical system and special instruments is inserted into the body.
  • Neuronavigation. A computer system that allows the surgeon to accurately determine the location of a tumour or other pathological focus in the brain and perform an operation with minimal damage to surrounding tissues.
  • Laser. This device emits a high-intensity directional light beam and can excise, coagulate or vaporize tissue.
  • CyberKnife. A robot-controlled radiosurgical system that allows the treatment of various tumours without resection using high-precision radiation therapy.

Modern methods of minimally invasive surgery play an important role in saving the lives of patients with severe diagnoses, such as pituitary tumours, aortic aneurysms, and heart defects.
