The hospital is located near the border with the Netherlands in the city of Krefeld. It is part of the well-known Helios Hospital Group network.

It is an academic hospital of the University of Aachen, one of the best universities in Germany in biomedicine. It is certified according to IQM standards. In 2020, Focus magazine included the hospital in the list of the best in Germany.

The hospital features a center for diagnostic and interventional radiology and its own blood bank. Patients have access to a digital platform. It stores the entire medical history, schedule of appointments, doctor's appointments, prescriptions, and bills.

Oncology treatment at Helios Hospital Krefeld

Doctors specialize in the application of new methods of cancer treatment of such organs:

  • mammary gland;
  • lungs;
  • intestines;
  • prostate;
  • uterus and ovaries.

97% of surgical procedures are performed laparoscopically.

Among the achievements of the cancer center (according to the hospital):

  • zero death rate for removal of the colon for colorectal cancer;
  • over 99% of successful procedures to remove the kidneys, bladder, prostate gland;
  • 98% of successful operations to remove part of the lungs.

Also, prostate adenoma is treated here according to the new non-surgical Rezum Therapy method, using the thermal energy of water vapor. This allows to fully preserve the erectile function of men.

The 5 departments of Helios Krefeld are certified by the German Cancer Society DKG. These are departments for the treatment of malignant diseases of the head and neck, lungs, intestines, skin, and gynecological oncology.

Cardiac Surgery at Helios Hospital Krefeld

The hospital offers modern methods of treatment of all heart diseases, excluding transplantation. The center has received 7 awards from the German Cardiology Associations.

The most popular minimally invasive procedures:

  1. Ablation. It is performed in a catheter way through a blood vessel in the groin to the heart. If necessary, doctors combine heart ablation with surgery.
  2. Heart valve replacement by TAVI. The procedure is performed in a hybrid operating room. During the procedure, cardiac surgeons use a special catheter with a balloon and a folded valve.
  3. Clipping (reconstruction) of the mitral valve. It is performed in a catheter way using MitraClip. It reduces mitral valve leakage without surgery.
  4. Reconstruction of the aortic valve. Doctors perform different types of procedures: Yakub remodeling, David reimplantation, Ross surgery, and Ozaki surgery.

According to the hospital, 99% of heart surgeries are successful.

The department offers packaged programs:

  • "Replacement of the aortic valve";
  • “Aortocoronary bypass grafting”;
  • "Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI)".

The Helios Krefeld Cardiology Center is a scientific and practical base for training in the technique of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).

Neurosurgery at Helios Hospital Krefeld

To successfully treat diseases of the brain and spinal cord, doctors use an individual approach and teamwork of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, and radio-surgeons. Popular treatment options:

  1. Endovascular and catheter interventions. They provide access to complex anatomical structures through a small skin incision and the introduction of a catheter through a vessel.
  2. Surgical treatment. Doctors practice minimally invasive procedures, which are carried out in hybrid operating rooms under the control of neuronavigation and neuromonitoring systems.
  3. Radiosurgery using the Gamma Knife system. It allows for performing the treatment of deep-located tumors of the brain, neck, epilepsy, and Parkinson's disease. Instead of a scalpel, the surgeon uses radiation beams collected in beams that precisely penetrate the desired area. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis.

Neurosurgeons of the hospital have achieved great success in the field of stroke therapy. The Stroke Center is certified as a regional center by the German Stroke Association.

Diagnosis: Gamma Knife

The best clinic, the best doctors! I am extremely happy that I came to them for treatment! Thank you for your hard work! My operation went perfectly, Doctor from God, Professor Shtofell, operated on me! Everything went well!

Diagnosis: Hip replacement

I had a hip replacement. The clinic is good, the rooms are comfortable and spacious. I was with my wife, both were satisfied with the accommodation. Professor Kraft operated, and everything went at the highest level, he was very pleased, there were no complications, the same evening I was put on my feet, on the third day I was already walking along the corridor, on the 5th day I was sent for rehabilitation. It healed quickly, the seam’s pain did not bother me, and after 3 weeks everything went away. Professor Kraft is very attentive, he came personally, answered questions, and told the nuances. The junior staff did not speak English well which caused problems. Rehabilitation is very intensive and sensible. Gymnastics, exercise equipment, massages, walks, procedures – everything is selected individually and contributes to a quick recovery.

Diagnosis: Varicocele

I really enjoyed my stay at the clinic. Everyone is friendly and attentive. Doctors are top notch, professional and responsible. The room is perfect, the food is good. I liked everything, and most importantly, they helped my problem. I am very glad. Thanks a lot.

Diagnosis: Urology

Everything was great! All at the highest level! The stay at the clinic was productive and comfortable.

Diagnosis: Epilepsy

The quality of medicine at the Helios clinic is high. The diagnosis was made clearly, we had many questions related to the disease, all questions were answered.  A gentle therapy was prescribed – this was a priority for us.

Diagnosis: Shoulder dislocation

Latergert operation to eliminate habitual dislocation.

For 10 years I suffered from habitual dislocation of the shoulder joint – damage to the bankart.

It has now been 3 weeks since the operation. Already now I can perform those exercises that are planned only in 3-4 weeks, which, in my opinion, is very cool. Pain with movement goes away and freedom of movement returns. I thank Prof. Clayton N.Kraft and operating surgeon Klaus Sternemann.

Why do foreign patients choose Helios Krefeld for joint replacement?

joint replacement in Helios KrefeldIn this clinic, large joint replacements are performed at the Ortho-Campus interdisciplinary center. Orthopedic surgeons perform 250 hip surgeries and 140 knee replacements annually. “Under the same roof”, doctors perform surgery and complete rehabilitation of the patient.

Advantages of Ortho-Campus include:

  • the result is provided by one interdisciplinary team (surgeon, orthopedist, physiotherapist), which guides the patient from the first consultation to discharge;
  • high-tech 3D planning of the operation with individual selection of the latest generation endoprosthesis is perfomed in the center;
  • preoperative rehabilitation of the patient is carried out (preparation for surgery with the help of exercises);
  • surgeons perform arthroplasty through a small incision, using sparing, minimally invasive techniques that preserve the muscles around the joint;
  • an intensive rehabilitation process usually begins immediately after the intervention and allows patients to stand on their feet on the day of surgery and return to normal walking in 4-5 days.

After discharge from Ortho Campus, most patients are almost ready to lead a normal life. If necessary, in difficult cases, rehabilitation can be continued until the desired result is obtained.

What robotic operations are performed at Helios Krefeld?

With the help of the Da Vinci robotic surgical unit, the clinic performs the following operations:

  • urological – prostatectomy (removal of the prostate gland), partial and complete nephrectomy (removal of the kidney), plastic surgery of the renal pelvis, cystectomy (removal of the bladder);
  • abdominal – resection of the rectum and colon, pancreas, esophagus, and stomach;
  • gynecological – removal of fibroids, removal of the uterus and lymph nodes in the pelvis.

The latest Da Vinci Xi surgical robot is used in Helios Krefeld. This makes it possible to perform sparing operations on elderly patients who have been denied conventional operations.

What types of cancer are treated in children at Helios Krefeld?

cancer treatment in children at Helios KrefeldThe interdisciplinary pediatric oncology center certified by the German Cancer Society (DKG) provides complex treatment of the following diseases:

  • leukemias and lymphomas;

How are operations at the Helios Krefeld Cardiac Surgery Center different?

operations at the Helios Krefeld Cardiac Surgery CenterMany heart surgeries that are successfully performed by the center’s cardiac surgeons are the latest modifications of existing interventions. These innovative interventions minimize operational risks for patients and provide a shorter rehabilitation period.

In coronary artery bypass grafting, cardiac surgeons use the internal mammary and radial arteries, which provides the best long-term results. During the operation, a modern, more gentle heart-lung machine (HLM) is used. In many patients, surgeries are performed on the beating heart (OPCAB) using myocardial stabilization devices. MIDCAB (minimally invasive coronary artery bypass) procedure through a 5 cm incision is carried out.

Since 2010, the center’s cardiac surgeons have been performing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The success rate of the procedure, according to Helios Krefeld, is 99%.

The center’s leading cardiac surgeon, Associate Professor Dr. Jaroslav Benedik, successfully performs the innovative Ozaki operation, which is available only in a few cardiac surgery centers in the world. The Ozaki operation is an innovative method for reconstructing the aortic valve using your own tissue from the pericardium (the outer lining of the heart). This technique for correcting aortic valve disease provides a more natural and reliable result than the use of an artificial valve. The Ozaki operation is especially suitable for young and middle-aged patients, as it has a number of advantages:

  • after surgery, patients do not take blood thinners, as with other types of aortic valve replacement;
  • the procedure can also be performed on patients with severely calcified and infected aortic valves;
  • longer valve function with a low risk of calcium deposits.

In addition, the most complicated Ross operation, in which the patient’s own valve of the pulmonary artery is installed in place of the aortic valve, and the donor valve takes the place of the pulmonary valve, is carried out in the center. Such an operation is usually performed for lesions of the aortic valve in patients under 55 years of age, in women planning a pregnancy, in children and adolescents. At Helios Krefeld, the Ross operation is performed by cardiac surgeons who have performed more than 500 of these interventions with a success rate of about 100%.

What are the advantages of spinal surgery at Helios Krefeld?

At Helios Hospital Krefeld, spinal surgery is performed by the center’s leading spinal surgeon, of the national (Master’s certificate from the German Spine Society (DWG)) and international level, Prof. Dr. Michael Stoffel. He specializes in minimally invasive surgery for degenerative diseases (herniated discs, stenoses), tumors, metastases, anomalies in the development of the spinal cord and spine, and revision (repeated) operations for these pathologies.
