Aziz Sumer graduated from Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine in 1997, and in 2005 he completed his specialization at Istanbul Haydarpasa Numune Training and Research Hospital, 2nd General Surgery Clinic.
He trained in endocrine and laparoscopic surgery in Austria, working at the AKH Hospital under the direction of Professor Bruno Niederle in the Department of Endocrine Surgery, and the Department of General Surgery of the Medical University of Vienna in 2005.
He has participated in many trainings around the world, including the IRCAD-EITS Da-Vinci Surgical System Off-Site distance learning program in France.
During his training at the Department of General Surgery of Istanbul University in 2010, he performed the first laparoscopic pancreatic surgery using the single-incision technique and laparoscopic liver resection using the single-incision technique at Yüzüncü Yıl University.
He was the first in the world to perform the following operations using the laparoscopic method: subtotal resection of the pancreas, splenectomy (spleen), adrenalectomy (adrenal glands), liver surgery for echinococcal cysts, abdominal hernia surgery, trans-abdominal pre-peritoneal repair of inguinal hernia (TAPP).
In 2011 in Spain, at the University of Virgen del Rocio (The Unit of Innovation and Minimally Invasive Surgery University Hospital Virgen del Rocio) collaborated with Professor Salvador Morales Conde in work in the field of advanced laparoscopic surgery, laparoscopic inguinal and incisional hernia, obesity surgery.
In 2011 in Rome, Italy, in collaboration with Professor Roberto Tacino, he participated in the performance of laparoscopic obesity surgery at the Department of Surgery of the University of Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.
In 2012 he received the title of associate professor, and in 2017 – professor of general surgery. In 2013, he graduated from the Special Program in Organ Transplantation (Kidney) at the Faculty of Medicine of Acibadem University.
Aziz Sumer has authored more than 85 articles published in more than 100 national and international journals.
He is also the author of 5 book chapters.
