Diagnosis: spinal surgery

I spent 11 days at Alfred Krupp Hospital in the orthopedics department due to an intervertebral hernia that, despite the best efforts of the doctors and medical staff, required surgery on the 9th day. All the departments I went through were excellent, with friendly and helpful people. Organizationally everything was in order and the food was really excellent with a good selection of dishes and the portions were generous.

I would particularly like to mention:

  • The friendly people at the emergency room who helped me quickly and in an organized manner at the initial appointment.
  • The wonderful medical staff on ward 2B.
  • The pleasant girls in the catering department.
  • The doctors, from assistants to senior doctors who were top notch.
  • Excellent team of anesthesiologists who despite my fear and severe pain, performed the anesthesia perfectly.
  • The nice girl at the CT scan who was incredibly kind and understanding.

All in all, I can’t say anything bad. And if some of the medical staff were sometimes not on top of things, that’s fine, because they are human too and work under a lot of stress. Nevertheless, the job was done perfectly. Thank you for that!

What are the latest technologies used in spine surgery in Germany?

Back surgery in germany

German medicine is one of the most technologically advanced in the world. The field of spine surgery is no exception. German neurosurgeons who specialize in the treatment of diseases of the spine and spine cord actively use innovative techniques such as:

  • Robotic surgery. Robotic systems such as Da Vinci and Mazor X allow German spine surgeons to perform operations with high precision. Robots help to minimize human errors, especially in complex operations such as vertebral fixation. These systems also reduce the risk of complications and shorten the rehabilitation time.
  • Hybrid operating rooms with 3D navigation. Spine surgery in Germany involves the use of hybrid operating rooms that combine 3D navigation and robotics. This combination allows doctors to act very precisely when performing complex operations, such as implanting stabilization systems in the spine.
  • Augmented reality. This technology is actively being introduced into the field of spine surgery in Germany to improve visualization during operations. It helps surgeons see anatomical structures in real time. The technique helps minimize the risk of damage to nerves and blood vessels and generally improves the success of the operations.
  • Implantation of artificial discs (Artificial Disc Replacement – ADR). Unlike traditional spine fixation, disc replacement allows to maintain spine mobility. Modern artificial discs allow to restore the natural movement of the spine, which helps patients quickly return to an active lifestyle without pain and limitations.
  • ApiFix system. Scoliosis treatment is one of the most developed areas of spine surgery in Germany. The innovative ApiFix system is designed to correct spine curvature in adolescents and young people. This method allows to achieve excellent results without the need for traditional surgery, which involves large incisions. This significantly reduces the rehabilitation period and allows the child to return to normal life as quickly as possible.
  • Dynamic fixation of the spine. German spine surgeons actively use implants that provide the necessary support for the spinal column without limiting mobility. The technique allows patients to maintain spine function after surgery.

Access to modern technology is one of the main advantages of spine surgery in Germany. This country is a recognized center for the development of medicine in the world. That is why many international patients choose it for complex procedures such as spine surgery.

How much does spine surgery cost in Germany and what is included in this price?

The price of spine surgery in German clinics can vary depending on the complexity of the procedure and the prestige of the clinic. On average, the cost of surgery ranges from 8,000 to 30,000 euros. Below are examples of prices in leading German medical centers.

What are the experience and qualifications of German surgeons in the field of spine surgery?

Spine surgery in Germany

German spine surgeons are renowned for their high qualifications and experience, making Germany a leader in this field. One of the key indicators of the effectiveness of operations is the high percentage of successful outcomes, which on average reaches 95-99% for most spine surgeries, including interventions to remove intervertebral hernias, correct scoliosis, and stabilize the spine.

Germany is a leader in many areas of spine neurosurgery. It was in this country in 1898 that the first successful operation under spine anesthesia was performed. This method, developed by the German surgeon August Bier, became revolutionary and is still used in world medicine.

The best clinics for spine surgery in Germany have become pioneers in the use of third-generation artificial intervertebral discs and facet joint replacement. These operations allow you to maintain the mobility of the spinal column, which significantly improves the quality of life of patients.

Which spine surgeons in Germany can be called the best?

The country has a large number of experienced and highly qualified neurosurgeons. Experts Medical cooperates with the best of them.

Spinal surgeon in GermanyProf. Michael Rauschmann

Dr. Rauschmann is one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in Germany and abroad in general, specializing in spine surgery and reconstructive orthopedics. He is the head of the department of spine and reconstructive orthopedic surgery at the Sana Clinic in Offenbach.

He has extensive experience in the treatment of various spine diseases, such as scoliosis, tumors, and degenerative diseases. In his work, he pays special attention to revision surgeries, as well as complex cases involving injuries and instability of the spine.

Doctor Daniel Begrich

He is one of the leading specialists in spine surgery in Germany, with extensive experience in minimally invasive and robotic spine surgeries. The doctor specializes in various procedures, including microdiscectomy, intervertebral disc replacement, and scoliosis correction. His approach includes the use of cutting-edge technologies such as robotic systems and 3D navigation, which enables operations to be performed with minimal trauma to surrounding tissue and high precision.

Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) is one of Daniel Begrich’s areas of expertise. It helps patients avoid the need for spine fusion. Up to 70% of patients can return to sports after this operation, which is not possible with other types of surgery.

Spinal neurosurgeon in Germany

Professor Michael Stoffel

He is a highly qualified neurosurgeon with over 28 years of experience, specializing in complex spine surgeries. He is the head of the Department of Spine Surgery at Helios Hospital Krefeld. Dr. Stoffel has extensive expertise in neuro-oncology, skull base surgery, and vascular neurosurgery and actively performs complex spine surgeries for the treatment of herniated discs, spine stenosis, and degenerative diseases of the spine.

One of the key areas of Dr. Stoffel’s work is minimally invasive spine surgery, which helps reduce risks and speed up the rehabilitation of patients. He also specializes in the surgical treatment of tumors of the spine and spine cord, using advanced methods such as neuronavigation and stereotactic surgery. These technologies allow for highly precise interventions without damaging healthy surrounding tissue.

Professor Marcus Jäger

Marcus Jäger is a leading German orthopedist and traumatologist specializing in spine surgery. He heads the Spine Center at the University Hospital Essen, where he treats a wide range of spine diseases.

Dr. Jäger has extensive experience in complex spine surgeries, such as transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. The best clinics for spine surgery in Germany

There are many highly specialized and multidisciplinary clinics in the country that provide high-quality services in the field of spine surgery. In Germany, there is a dual funding system for medical institutions, thanks to which local hospitals receive the most modern equipment and everything necessary to provide effective medical care.

Best Spine Surgery Clinics in Germany

University Hospital Essen

Essen Clinic is one of the largest neurosurgical centers in Germany. Every year, around 2,500 spine surgeries are performed here. The neurosurgeons at the Essen Center actively use innovative technologies such as neuronavigation, intraoperative neuromonitoring and hybrid operating rooms. This allows them to perform operations with high precision and minimal risks. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of complex spine diseases such as spine cord tumors, spine stenosis, and spine deformities.

Sana Clinic in Offenbach

Sana Clinic in Offenbach, under the direction of Professor Michael Rauschmann, is a shining example of the highest quality of spine surgery in Germany. The hospital is known for the successful treatment of complex cases of spine injuries and deformities, as well as the use of minimally invasive techniques to reduce the recovery time of patients. Local neurosurgeons perform complex revision surgeries, which are necessary after unsuccessful previous spine surgeries. Therefore, patients from all over the world come here for treatment.

Contiglia Spine Center at St. Mary’s Hospital

The Spine Center in Mülheim an der Ruhr specializes in minimally invasive surgeries and conservative treatments for spine diseases. The latest technologies, such as microinvasive interventions using catheters and needles under imaging control are used in the center. Some of the center’s popular areas of activity are the use of radiofrequency and thermal ablation for the treatment of chronic pain, as well as autologous transplantation of disc cartilage cells.

How is rehabilitation spent after spine surgery in Germany?

rehabilitation after back surgery in Germany

Functional physiotherapy begins in the first 24 hours after surgery to prevent muscle atrophy. The exercise program is tailored individually for each patient. One of the innovative approaches is aqua therapy, which reduces the load on the spine and helps patients regain mobility faster. Robotic systems are also actively used to monitor and correct movements during rehabilitation.

On average, rehabilitation takes 6 to 12 weeks, but it depends on the complexity of the surgery and the patient’s health.

For foreign patients, German clinics offer specialized recovery programs with the possibility of continued monitoring in their home country.

Do German doctors provide guarantees for spine surgeries?

German medical centers usually do not provide lifetime guarantees for the results of spine surgeries but they do provide a high level of quality treatment and postoperative monitoring. The best spine surgery clinics in Germany offer certain guarantees for the short-term success of the surgery, which means the possibility of a repeat procedure or treatment of complications for several months or years free of charge.

In Germany, medical practice is strictly regulated by bodies such as the German Medical Association (Bundesärztekammer) and the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG), which monitor treatment standards and patient safety. These organizations are a certain guarantee of the effectiveness of the surgery.
