A kidney transplant is considered in end-stage kidney failure, when the patient's own kidneys stop working. The approach depends on the cause of kidney disease, the patient's general health and compatibility with the donor.
Living donor kidney transplant
the main option for international patients
The donor can be a relative of the patient with a matching blood type and tissue compatibility. The donor's healthy kidney is transplanted to the patient, and the patient's own kidneys are usually not removed.

Doctors check the blood type and HLA compatibility, the antigens that determine the risk of rejection. The donor is examined to make sure the operation is safe for their health.

Tests before a kidney transplant
Before drawing up a treatment plan, doctors review the tests you have already had and decide whether additional ones are needed. Some records can be assessed before you travel.
Which tests the patient and donor undergo+
The patient and donor have their blood type determined and undergo tissue compatibility (HLA) testing. Their general health is also checked: blood and urine tests, examinations of the heart, lungs and abdominal organs, and screening for infections.
The donor is examined further to make sure that donating a kidney will not put their health at risk.
Who can be a donor+
For international patients, the transplant is usually planned with a living donor, most often a relative. Requirements for the donor and for documents confirming the relationship are set by local regulations; the coordinator will check them with the clinic before you travel.

Based on test results and the nephrologist's reports, the transplant surgeon can make a preliminary assessment of whether surgery is possible and prepare an approximate estimate.

Can I get a transplant plan and cost before I travel?
Yes. Our doctor-coordinator will review the medical records of the patient and donor, help you choose a clinic and arrange for your case to be reviewed. The clinic will prepare a preliminary program and cost estimate. The final plan is confirmed after the patient and donor are examined in Turkey.
How long does a transplanted kidney work?
How long a new kidney works depends on compatibility with the donor, the patient's general health and how closely the recommendations and medication schedule are followed. Only a transplant surgeon can assess the outlook in your case.
How long does a trip to Turkey for a kidney transplant take?
According to the clinic's program, the patient's trip takes about 30 days, including about 10 days in hospital. The donor needs about 9 days, including 5 days in hospital. Surgery is performed after compatibility testing, followed by discharge and regular follow-up examinations.
What is included in the cost of a kidney transplant?
The services included depend on the clinic's program. When comparing offers, check whether they include a consultation with the surgeon, tests for the patient and donor, medication before and after surgery and the hospital stay, and how testing of additional donor candidates and extra days in hospital are paid. The coordinator will help you understand the clinic's offer.
What if a relative is not a suitable donor?
If the first candidate is not compatible, the next one is tested. Which other donors may be considered depends on local regulations; the coordinator will check the options with the clinic.
Which documents are needed to review my case?
Prepare the nephrologist's report, blood and urine tests, and information about dialysis and the blood type of the patient and donor. Approval of the transplant will also require documents confirming the relationship with the donor; the coordinator will tell you which language and certification are needed.
Do my medical records need to be translated?
Before ordering a translation yourself, check the requirements with your doctor-coordinator. They will tell you which documents the chosen clinic needs and in what format to send them, and will help arrange a translation if necessary.
