Diagnosis: cardiac ischemia

When three years ago coronary heart disease really hit me, I couldn’t walk 50 meters without pain. I had to look for opportunities to have heart surgery. I went to Germany for bypass surgery. All operations there are carried out at a completely different level. They are much easier to tolerate and there is no need to stay in intensive care for weeks. Since then there have been no problems. I do Nordic walking. I walk 10 km a day, sometimes more. I’m a healthy person. If you are currently struggling with your heart, take my advice. Agree to the operation. Living by limiting yourself in everything, when you want to with your thoughts, but physically cannot, is very scary. But the heart surgery itself is not scary. Before that, I had an operation on my intestines. Compared to this, cardiology is a piece of cake.

In July 2021, I had to go to the Ulm Hospital for coronary artery bypass surgery. Everything was well organized and carried out very professionally. Everything from hospitalization and examinations, to the bypass surgery itself and postoperative care – everything is at a very high level! The clinic has comfortable conditions. Thank you to the team at the Cardiac Surgery Department of the Ulm Clinic!

We contacted the Helios Krefeld hospital regarding my father’s treatment. My dad had heart bypass surgery. I am very pleased with the treatment, conditions and attitude of the staff towards us. The post-op care is very good and the staff is always there. The hospital infrastructure is excellent and sets you up for recovery. Parking, cafeteria, pharmacy – everything is right there.

Recommendations include quitting smoking, losing weight, changing your diet, and constantly monitoring your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

What are the differences between bypass surgery and stenting?

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG):

  • Often involving abdominal surgery;
  • Due to the fact that this is a more radical method, patient survival is higher;
  • The operation is indicated for patients with multiple blockages of the arteries, as well as impaired heart function to pump blood and pathologies of the heart valves;
  • Heavier load on the body and longer rehabilitation period;
  • The operation is performed under general anesthesia and requires the connection of a ventilator and circulatory system.

Stenting:

  • Minimally invasive method (through a small incision);
  • It is possible to install 3-4 stents in 1 operation;
  • The operation is indicated for patients with milder stages of arterial blockage;
  • The operation is much easier and the patient is discharged the next day;
  • The operation is performed under local anesthesia;
  • There is a possibility of blood clots forming at the stent site.
