Keratoconus treatment methods

There are several types of treatment:

1. Methods for preserving the cornea:

Crosslinking is an artificial aging cornea with photochemical effects in order to increase the strength of the horny shell of the eye to prevent the progression of keratoconus
Diamond surgery (keratoconus radial keratotomy) is the restoration of the state and the function of the cornea through the controlled regression of keratoconus caused by the therapeutic scarring of the applied surgeon of cuts.

2. Corneal transplantation method:

Keratoplasty is an operational interference with corneal transplantation. Full removal and replacement of the cornea.

Indications for corneal transplantation

Thanks to the cornea, the image clearly focuses on the retina, which allows a person to see. Lumbling or changing the spherical structure (keratoconus) leads to a violation of vision. In fact, this disease is the thinning of the cornea epithelium, which changes the form under the influence of eye pressure. In many cases, the only way out is the complete replacement of the shell on the donor, that is, transplantation.

The main indication for the use of surgery is heavy conditions (eg clouding, ulcers, injuries, inflammation, existence, (cornea disorders), against which the optical (visual) corneal functions are deeply disturbed, without the possibility of correction), when it is no longer possible to preserve the patient’s own cornea with other treatment methods, and the only way out is a partial or complete replacement of the horny shell of the eye to the donor, that is, transplantation.

Description and basic principles of corneal transplantation

With the help of a special high-accuracy laser, the part of the cornea is removed, which should ideally fit the form and sizes of the implant transplantation.

Three types of manipulation are distinguished:

PKP is a complete end-to-end corneal transplantation (penetrating keratoplasty);
DALK is a replacement of the outer part of the cornea (lamellar);
DSEK – Replacing the back part (endothelial).

Rehabilitation lasts about 18 months. Hospitalization is shown in the period from 1 day to one week.

In the recovery process, eye drops are prescribed. If necessary, immunosuppressants are also prescribed, preventing the implantation rejection.
