Diagnosis: hydrocephalus treatment

I had suspicions that something was wrong with my daughter, and my pediatrician also noticed some unusual symptoms, so he referred us to a specialist. It turned out she had hydrocephalus, but luckily it was detected very early and didn’t develop quickly. My mother-in-law had previously been treated at the University Hospital Düsseldorf in the gastroenterology department and she insisted that we go there. Diagnosis and treatment were very quick, in just five days. Our daughter had a neuroendoscopy. Now she is completely healthy and does not differ from other children of her age, and this is the merit of the excellent German neurosurgeons. I recommend treatment in Germany and this clinic!

Diagnosis: hydrocephalus treatment

My baby received this diagnosis at the age of 7 months. Our neurologist made such a verdict after examination, and after a consilium of doctors, all unanimously agreed with him. Despite the confidence of doctors and their insistence on the need for immediate treatment, I decided to seek help from experienced German specialists. I chose Solingen Clinic because of its good reviews. We were warmly welcomed, helped with hotel accommodation and diagnostics. My relief was huge when after all the examinations, the doctors informed me that the diagnosis was not confirmed. My child has a big head, but it is within the normal range for his age, and he has no signs of increased intracranial pressure. Now, he attends kindergarten and is actively growing and developing.

Diagnosis: hydrocephalus treatment

My heartfelt thanks to the German doctors from Helios Krefeld! My one and a half year old child was successfully operated on for congenital occlusive hydrocephalus. Now my daughter is on the mend. She is still in rehabilitation, but soon we will be back home.

Diagnosis: hydrocephalus treatment

For the last few months after my injury I have been suffering from severe headaches and constant nausea. I regularly travel to Germany and this time I decided to go for a check-up. Here the cost of services is quite affordable, and the atmosphere is much more pleasant than in our country. The traumatologist at the Sana Clinic urgently referred me to a neurosurgeon for a consultation. The diagnosis was “high intracranial pressure due to hydrocephalus”. I decided to undergo treatment here. On the whole, everything went well. The headaches disappeared and the surgery was performed using endoscopy. A week after the operation, I was back home.

According to the summary data of German clinics, the success rate of hydrocephalus treatment is 90%, and in some clinics, it exceeds this figure. This is one of the highest rates in the world, which in the vast majority of cases, guarantees a complete cure. The data are confirmed by patient reviews of hydrocephalus treatment in Germany. German doctors manage to save babies with this pathology in almost all cases. Therefore, it is important to contact specialists as early as possible.

What is the danger of hydrocephalus?

cerebral hydrocephalusHydrocephalus, or cerebral hydrocephalus, refers to a serious neurological pathology, which is characterized by an excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (liquor) inside the ventricles of the brain. This increases intracranial pressure and causes an increase in the size of the head.

According to WHO, hydrocephalus affects 700,000 people worldwide, most of whom are children. Brain hydrocephalus can occur at any age.

The causes of the development of the disease can be congenital anomalies, craniocerebral trauma, cytalomegavirus infection, inflammation and brain tumors.

In the absence of timely therapy, the pathological process leads to serious disorders of development, intelligence, memory, vision, hearing, speech and motor functions. Hydrocephalus often becomes a cause of disability and has a high risk of lethal outcomes.

How is hydrocephalus diagnosed in Germany?

diagnosis of hydrocephalus in GermanyIn addition to neurological examination of the patient, a set of tests is prescribed in German centers. It allows doctors to determine the pathogenesis of the disease and get a detailed picture of the brain structures. To develop a therapy plan, it is important to find out to which classification the type of hydrocephalus belongs. Diagnosis may include:

  1. One method: MRI, CT scan, or brain ultrasound, which provide an accurate image of the ventricular tissues and the liquor circulation.
  2. Neurosonography is a quick and informative ultrasound option for infants using the fontanelle. After the fusion of the bones of the skull, it is impossible to conduct a study.
  3. Lumbar puncture. From the patient, 50-60 ml of cerebrospinal fluid is taken. This allows you to determine the degree of pressure on the brain and temporarily improve the condition.
  4. Laboratory blood tests.

As additional examinations, an ophthalmologist’s consultation and ophthalmoscopy may be appointed to assess the condition of the blood vessels and retina.

Methods of hydrocephalus treatment in Germany

The only option to rid a person of pathology remains surgery. It aims to prevent further brain damage and restore cerebrospinal fluid’s natural outflow.

In Germany, patients have access to advanced surgical treatments. They are suitable for the therapy of hydrocephalus of any etiology:

  1. Surgical treatment of hydrocephalus in GermanyShunting is a neurosurgical intervention in which the doctor inserts a thin catheter (shunt) into the bottom of the patient’s skull. It is connected to another shunt directed into the pleural or abdominal cavity. This ensures constant drainage of excess liquor from the brain and reduces pressure on it. Various types of shunts are used in Germany, including programmable, antibacterial and antisiphon shunts. They can regulate the volume and rate of fluid drainage, prevent infection and fluid transfusion.
  2. Neuroendoscopic assisted ventriculocystostomy is a minimally invasive intervention performed using a neuroendoscope. The device has a mini camera that displays the operating field on a monitor, allowing for jewel-like precision. The surgeon creates a hole in the ventricular wall and places a catheter to drain the fluid. The procedure is performed with minimal blood loss and involves a quick recovery.
