About clinic

University Hospital Dusseldorf is a leading medical center in the western region of Germany. University Hospital Dusseldorf is a large multidisciplinary hospital with maximum coverage of all medical areas. This is the clinical base of the Medical Faculty of the University. Heine: 130 professors work in the clinic.

The clinic includes 34 specialized departments and centers that cooperate with specialized research institutes. They jointly develop new diagnostic and treatment methods that are rapidly being introduced into clinical practice.

University Hospital Dusseldorf has been named one of the “Best Smart Hospitals in the World 2023” by Newsweek magazine. It is also regularly included in the ranking of “25 best hospitals in Germany” by the German magazine Focus.

The presence of the most modern equipment, world-class specialists, and interdisciplinary cooperation of doctors allow to help patients even in the most difficult cases.

What do foreign patients treat at the University Hospital Dusseldorf?

Every year, 50,000 patients are treated at the University Hospital, including those from around the world. Most often, foreign patients choose this clinic to receive the following medical services:

  • treatment of all types of cancer in a large interdisciplinary cancer center using innovative techniques;
  • treatment of children and adults with oncohematological and rare diseases in specialized departments;
  • minimally invasive, hybrid, and complex operations in various fields of medicine such as cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, urology, gynecology;
  • high-tech diagnostics in patients with an unclear diagnosis.

The University Hospital Dusseldorf has a Coordinating Center for International Patients. It cooperates with operators organizing treatment abroad, who supervise patients, ensure that they do not have a language barrier, and provide comprehensive support during their stay in the hospital.

Treatment of leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome in Dusseldorf

In the Clinic of Hematology, Oncology, and Clinical Immunology at the University Hospital in Dusseldorf, malignant blood diseases such as acute and chronic leukemia, lymphomas, and myeloma are treated at the level of the best world standards. As well, the main area of work is the therapy of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). These are diseases of hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow.

Dusseldorf maintains the world's largest register of people diagnosed with MDS. On this basis, the clinic is studying the effectiveness of various treatments for MDS in large-scale studies. Since 1999, the clinic has had the international status of “Center of Excellence in the Treatment of MDS”.

Modern molecular biological diagnostics in this center allow developing and applying a personalized treatment protocol for each patient. It can include both sparing targeted drugs and high-dose chemotherapy with blood stem cell transplantation, which has been carried out in the clinic since 1989. Currently, autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is conducted. It is successfully performed in both elderly patients and people with severe comorbidities.

Innovative cancer diagnosis and treatment at the University Hospital Dusseldorf

The advanced methods of radioisotope imaging diagnostics are widely used in the oncology center:

  • scintigraphy of various organs and tissues;
  • SPECT single photon emission computed tomography) ;
  • various types of PET (positron emission tomography);
  • SPECT-CT, PET-CT.

This allows to accurately identify even the smallest metastases of all types of cancer throughout the body and determine the effectiveness of treatment at any stage of the disease. With lymphatic scintigraphy, oncologists mark sentinel lymph nodes before surgery to remove a tumor. Diagnosis of neuroblastoma and pheochromocytoma is carried out using MIBG scintigraphy.

In the treatment of cancer, doctors also use nuclear medicine techniques. For example, in the treatment of malignant liver tumors, selective intra-arterial radiation therapy (SIRT) is performed. Bone metastases in prostate cancer are treated with Ra-223 radionuclide therapy.

The use of these high-tech diagnostic and treatment methods increases the chance of recovery in most cancer patients.

Benefits of joint replacement at University Hospital Dusseldorf

Surgeons of the Center for Orthopedics try to preserve their own hip or knee joint in patients as much as possible. Therefore, in many patients, an innovative treatment method is used. This is an autologous cartilage cell transplantation to restore articular surfaces. When it is not possible to save the joint, they perform arthroplasty, which has the following advantages:

  • this is a minimally invasive intervention through minimal incisions with maximum preservation of bone tissue with a reliable long-term result;
  • surgeons use innovative, cementless prostheses of the smallest size with a ceramic surface and a short shaft, individually adapted to the anatomy of the patient's joint;
  • doctors provide early rehabilitation even for elderly patients, which reduces the time of hospitalization.

You can turn to University Hospital Dusseldorf at any age with any medical problem. To do this, you need to leave an application for treatment in this clinic on the Experts Medical website. Doctors-coordinators of the service will help organize any type of treatment at the University Hospital in Düsseldorf in the desired time frame.

Already from the entrance to the clinic, I realized that there is excellent service here. Friendly staff works in all departments. You did not have to wait long for preliminary examinations. Despite the size of this hospital, you do not feel lost. Doctors are in no hurry and are very accurate, the food is also good, the wards in ZOM2 are first class 🙂 I will certainly return to this hospital for treatment at any time.

My father is in the aforementioned department. Real high class! Super team, calm, confident and always trying to make the patient’s stay as comfortable as possible. Since my father was in 5 clinics in the last 12 months, I must say that we could not make a better choice than the treatment in this hospital.

We were half an hour forgotten in the children’s hospital in the waiting area for children with infectious diseases, and then we had to wait another two hours. The waiting process is really long. Nevertheless, the doctor was good and competent.

  5. Advanced technical equipment and revolutionary methods of therapy have no analogues in Germany, and sometimes even in the world.
  6. They accept adults and children for treatment.
  7. Compliance with high international standards is confirmed by 11 awards and certificates.
What procedures are most in demand among foreign patients at Dusseldorf Hospital?

stroke treatmentThe availability of advanced medical diagnostic equipment and qualified medical staff allows patients to receive quality care even in the most difficult cases.

Foreign patients most often come for:

  • deep brain stimulation;
  • treatment of stroke, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease;
  • bone marrow transplantation;
  • immunotherapy;
  • surgical treatment of tumors;
  • coronary artery bypass grafting;
  • operations on the spine;
  • surgical treatment of the prostate gland;
  • IVF procedures;
  • natural childbirth and others.

Carefully designed check-up programs are also in demand. Patients during their stay in Dusseldorf have the opportunity to undergo basic and complex examinations as well as examinations of the gastrointestinal tract with vascular Doppler.

Why do patients choose cardiac surgery at Düsseldorf Hospital?

cardiac surgery in the clinic of DüsseldorfThe heart surgery center of the hospital is considered one of the best in Germany. World-class specialists practice here, who have extensive experience in performing the most complex interventions on the heart in adults and children. Every year, 2,000 examinations are carried out, and 5,000 patients are treated.

Advantages of cardiac surgery in Dusseldorf Hospital:

  1. Multidisciplinary approach: specialists from different fields are involved in order to make an accurate diagnosis and draw up a treatment regimen.
  2. Hybrid operating rooms equipped with intraoperative imaging systems.
  3. Robotic operations for minimally invasive interventions.
  4. Operations on both temporarily stopped and continuously working hearts.
  5. Innovative treatment technologies, which have no analogues in other clinics.

The surgeons of the center were the first to perform:

  • open heart surgery using hypothermia;
  • heart valve replacement;
  • implantation of a pacemaker and defibrillator system.

They also developed a unique method for performing heart surgery without being connected to a heart-lung machine. Thus, coronary artery bypass grafting, balloon angioplasty, and stenting are performed. Operations are also performed on people over 70 years of age.

How are oncohematological diseases treated in Dusseldorf Hospital?

Treatment of oncohematological diseases in the Dusseldorf clinicFor the treatment of oncohematological pathologies, the hospital uses all modern methods of therapy, including bone marrow transplantation (BMT). It is carried out in two ways:

  • autologous: the patient’s stem cells are transplanted;
  • allogeneic: transplantation from related and unrelated donors.

The hospital has 40 years of experience in the field of BMT. Specialists have performed more than 1,500 successful transplantations. Today, the BMT procedure has been improved, and serious side effects are practically not recorded.

The advantage is that BMT is possible in the medical center for the elderly and patients with concomitant diseases.

The hospital has its own stem cell bank named “Jose Carreras”.

Also, the medical center is recognized as a leader in the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a disorder of the hematopoiesis of the myeloid line. The specialists of the center conduct clinical, epidemiological, and molecular biological tests. The largest number of patients with MDS is registered here. The hospital has the status of “MDS Center of Excellence”.

Cancer patients can participate in clinical trials of innovative treatments.

Why do people go to Dusseldorf Hospital for the treatment of oncological diseases?

cancer treatment in the Dusseldorf clinicOncologists in the hospital have access to the most advanced technologies for the treatment of all types of cancer. Patients receive comprehensive medical care from diagnosis to individual rehabilitation.

A powerful medical and diagnostic base allows to create the most effective treatment regimen for each patient. The effectiveness of treatment and the possible occurrence of relapses are monitored using molecular biology.

One of the best nuclear technology centers in Germany operates on the basis of the hospital. All modern types of radiation therapy are carried out here:

  • remote therapy using TrueBeam linear accelerators;
  • brachytherapy: radioactive seeds or needles are placed into the tumor;
  • radionuclide therapy: the patient swallows a liquid or a capsule with a radioactive substance.

The advanced methods include:

  1. Radioimmune therapy is the destruction of tumors with the help of antibodies associated with radioactive substances. Advantages:
  • targeted effect on the tumor without harm to the body as a whole;
  • thanks to the combination of radiation and exposure to antibodies, the number of sessions is reduced and the treatment process is accelerated.
  1. Hyperthermia is a heat therapy using a heating device that is placed over the desired area of the body. With an increase in temperature, biochemical processes are accelerated and the supply of oxygen to tumors increases. Malignant cells die in the presence of oxygen.
  2. Genetic engineering makes it possible to give cells new properties and correct defects by introducing genes into somatic cells. Clinical trials in the hospital have shown the success of this technology.
  3. Stereotactic radiosurgery is performed by a point impact on tumors of various sizes with the help of Gamma Knife and Cyber Knife in 1-2 sessions.
What surgical interventions in the case of oncology are performed at Dusseldorf Hospital?

surgery for oncologyOncosurgeons focus on minimal organ-preserving interventions. Patients note the absence of complications, quick recovery, and inconspicuous scars.

The surgical interventions include:

  1. Laparoscopic (for the abdominal organs) and thoracoscopic (for the chest) ones. Tumors are removed through incisions up to 2 cm.
  2. Transluminal intervention. The tumor is removed through natural openings in the body. It is performed in the early stages in the organs of the gastrointestinal tract and the genitourinary system.
  3. Robotic intervention. These low-traumatic interventions are performed through incisions up to 2 cm using a Da Vinci unit equipped with a camera with a 20x magnification.

Open operations are resorted to in rare cases when the tumor has reached a large size with metastases in neighboring tissues and organs.

The entire treatment process complies with NCCN medical protocols.

A diagnostic check-up to detect cancer at an asymptomatic stage is also required in the clinic.

Why do patients choose neurosurgery at Düsseldorf Hospital?

neurosurgery at the Dusseldorf clinicThe physicians of Düsseldorf Hospital have made a significant contribution to the development of world neurosurgery. They were among the first to introduce modern technologies in the neurosurgery of tumors, blood vessels, skull surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, and the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Doctors consult patients from other countries via telemedicine and provide a second medical opinion. The Center cooperates with the Departments of Neuroradiology, Neurology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Radiation Therapy Clinic, Gamma Knife Center, and others.

Among the current technologies:

  1. Intraoperative monitoring is used to check the functions of the brain during operations. For example, when removing a tumor in the speech center of the brain with local anesthesia.
  2. Intraoperative fluorescent navigation is applied for better visualization of tumors. The technology increases the effectiveness of the intervention and minimizes the risk of tissue damage.
  3. The targeted introduction of drugs into the surrounding tumor tissues during the procedure is used to destroy the remaining affected cells.

In pediatric neurosurgery, endoscopic interventions are mainly performed, in which manipulations are carried out through minimal openings in the skull. The center is undergoing clinical trials of new methods of surgery for tumors and brain aneurysms.

Why is the Orthopedics Center of Düsseldorf Hospital unique?

full or partial joint replacementThe orthopedists at Düsseldorf Hospital have extensive experience in performing minimally invasive orthopedic procedures for children and adults. The head physician of the center, Rüdiger Krauspe, was recognized as the best orthopedist in Germany according to the Focus magazine.

Doctors perform:

  • full or partial prosthetics;
  • treatment of any injuries, including replantation after traumatic amputation;
  • cartilage plasty;
  • tendon reconstruction;
  • stem cell treatment;
  • genetic and molecular therapy.

The clinic has developed a unique non-prosthetic method of treatment with the help of ultrasound and cartilage plastic surgery – transplantation of bone and cartilage tissue.
