- Author of more than 135 publications on nephrology and dialysis in international medical publications.
Professor Doron Schwartz’s research activities include a variety of studies and publications covering nephrology, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease and anemia. His work focuses primarily on the interaction of renal disease with heart failure and anemia, which is known as cardio-renal syndrome. The professor’s research also concerns the use of erythropoietin and iron therapy to treat anemia in chronic kidney disease and heart failure. His research work addresses the therapy of inflammatory bowel disease, including the use of biologics and the impact of psychosocial factors on patients with Crohn’s disease.
Below is a brief overview of his research:
1. Cardio-renal syndrome and anemia:
- The professor has studied the impact of anemia on heart failure and chronic kidney disease, suggesting approaches to their treatment.
- Research concerns the role of erythropoietin and intravenous iron in improving patients with heart failure and chronic kidney disease.
2. Arterial and renal studies:
- Schwartz studied arginine transport and its role in maintaining normal endothelial function, especially in patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
3. Inflammatory bowel diseases:
- The professor has investigated biologic therapies such as vedolizumab and ustekinumab for the treatment of patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
- Research has also been conducted on the effects of psychological factors on the severity of inflammatory bowel disease.
4. Research in transplantation and vaccination:
- Schwartz studied the response to the Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccine in patients undergoing dialysis and in kidney transplant patients.
