Solingen Hospital – a long tradition of quality German medicine

The Solingen Municipal Hospital has a history of more than 150 years. Over the years it has evolved from a small "hospital for apprentices" into one of the most modern medical centers in the region. The clinic's management pays great attention to meeting the latest medical standards, which is why the hospital buildings have been rebuilt and modernized several times.

The medical team of the Solingen Clinic in Germany

The hospital employs 1,900 staff members, including physicians and nursing staff. The clinic is justifiably proud of its specialists, who have succeeded in various medical fields. In 2017, senior physician Prof. Peter Gehring was ranked among the world's top 80 specialists in the treatment of high blood pressure. He is also ranked among the top 3,000 doctors in the world.

The chief physician of the neurosurgical department at Solingen Hospital is Ralf Buhl. His reputation as a top-class neurosurgeon has long exceeded Germany's borders. Every year, patients from all over the world come to see Ralf Buhl in Great Britain, Spain, the USA, and Japan. The doctor became especially famous after he helped a star patient – George Clooney. The actor came to Germany to cope with the consequences of a long-standing back injury, which he received on a movie set.

In 2023, the prestigious German magazine Focus included three doctors from Solingen Hospital in its list of the best doctors in Germany:

  • Prof. Sascha Floe, chief physician of the Clinic for Traumatology, Orthopedics and Hand Surgery;
  • Prof. Markus Heuser, chief physician of the Clinic of Adult and Pediatric Urology;
  • Prof. Andreas Sesterhenn, Chief Physician of the Clinic of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Thyroid Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery.

Diagnosis: Postoperative complications

Overall my experience with the clinic’s medical staff was mostly positive — the staff were friendly and willing to help.

However, in the postoperative period there was an unpleasant situation related to the transport that raised questions for me. I was especially alarmed that during transport after surgery the medical staff were not clearly identified, and my remarks about this were not taken into account.

The management also tolerates inappropriate staff behaviour towards patients and their relatives. In my opinion, transporting patients after anaesthesia, when they are in a vulnerable state, without clear identification of staff is problematic. A lack of identification means a lack of accountability, which is unacceptable in a medical institution.

Diagnosis: Childhood oncology

I want to express, from the bottom of my heart, my huge and sincere gratitude.

My daughter was an oncology patient and underwent chemotherapy and antibody therapy. During this difficult period we were accompanied with exceptional medical and human attention.

Special thanks to the senior doctors, especially Dr. Zimmermann and the entire medical team. They were always there for my daughter, even on weekends and holidays, always available, involved and with great compassion. We never felt abandoned.

I would also like to specially mention the nursing staff of the oncology outpatient department. The nurses were always kind, professional, patient and competent. You can see that they do their work with heart and responsibility.

Thanks to the excellent treatment, professional decisions and human support, my daughter beat cancer. We are endlessly grateful. Please pass this gratitude on to the whole team — you do a huge job, professionally and humanely.

I want to thank the whole team of the Solingen city clinical centre, especially Mr. Haider from surgery. From the very beginning I felt I was in safe hands. He explained everything in detail, was calm and professional, which gave me confidence in a difficult situation.

He always responded to my complaints and gave me the feeling that I was truly heard and taken seriously. The medical staff were also attentive and friendly. I am very grateful for the care and can fully recommend the surgical department and Mr. Haider.

The pregnancy department was excellent. The doctors, midwives and nurses were very kind, professional, and supportive. I truly appreciate the care I receive. Because of my serious situation they transferred me to another hospital. The new hospital they transferred me to has the worst nursing staff I have ever encountered in my life. Maybe it’s because I’m African. They don’t care about me and don’t listen to me. I wish I could go back to Solingen Hospital.

Diagnosis: Fast-Track rehabilitation

I deliberately chose this clinic because it uses a modern Fast-Track programme. The principles are similar to ERAS: accelerated mobilisation, structured processes and gentle recovery. The DKZ certification was also important to me. The proximity of the clinic was also an advantage for examinations and follow-up.

During my stay I noticed a high flow of patients and at times a feeling of a “conveyor belt”. There was also a sense of understaffing, which sometimes led to shortened conversations and a lack of communication.

Nevertheless the staff remained friendly and tried to answer questions when there was time. Despite the workload, the medical processes were well organised, and I felt I was in safe hands. The Fast-Track programme helped me recover faster. Overall I am satisfied with my choice and recommend the clinic.

Diagnosis: postoperative recovery

The staff were generally fine. But the food in the hospital turned out not to be what I am used to. The bread was damp and sticky, the cheese tasteless. If I tick black tea, I want to get it, not unpleasant mint tea. It seemed as if there was a lack of dishes, and instead of normal service plastic tableware was used in large quantities.

After a complaint the breakfast became perfect, but the use of plastic tableware was still disappointing.

I want to share my positive experience in the delivery ward and the postnatal ward. The whole team was very friendly, attentive and professional. During the birth I felt safe and well monitored, which gave me great trust. Special thanks to the midwife Bettina.

The care on the postnatal ward was also excellent. The medical staff were attentive, helpful and caring towards me and my baby. The atmosphere was calm and supportive, which made the stay very comfortable.

The only small downside was the food with the paid services: orders were written down but what was ordered was not always delivered, and on the second day they brought the same food as the day before.

Diagnosis: Wrist injury

Overall the impression of the surgery was good, but that is the only positive.

I was admitted to the ZNA with a broken wrist, having been brought in as an emergency from Egypt. The operation should have been done quickly, but I was made to wait 9 days. In the department they do not issue prescriptions, you have to go to another building and wait again. No one warned about this.

The medication was also chosen incorrectly, no stomach protection from ibuprofen was prescribed, which caused irritation of my stomach lining. In the end I am very disappointed.

Diagnosis: Neurosurgery

My family and I came from Ireland in December for brain surgery, as I had suffered from epilepsy for 14 years because of a cavernoma. For many years I had seen many doctors and hospitals in Ireland trying to get this surgery, as it caused huge problems in my life: I could no longer play sports, go out and socialise with friends, or carry out normal daily activities without small or severe seizures. Last year it happened almost daily, and it affected me greatly.

I was lucky to speak by chance on the phone with Dr. Ralf Buhl, and from the first second I felt confident and for the first time thought it could really be fixed by surgery. He spoke with me and my family and said he could operate within a few weeks. We came to Solingen, met in person, and he discussed everything we needed in detail for as long as we needed. Two days after arriving I had the operation. I expected recovery to take 1–2 months, but thanks to Dr. Buhl and his team I was back home in Ireland within a week, able to walk, talk and, for the first time in years, live in peace.

From arrival until discharge Dr. Buhl personally monitored my condition and was always in touch, giving advice and answering questions. I recommend Dr. Ralf Buhl and his team to anyone facing a cavernoma or similar problems. Where I had seen no solution for 14 years, he helped in a matter of days. I am endlessly grateful that he changed my life and the life of my family.

Diagnosis: surgery

I recently had the privilege of undergoing surgery at Klinikum Solingen under the guidance of Prof. Schenker and I would like to share my experience. From start to finish, my treatment and care was exceptional.

From my first appointment at the clinic, I felt well taken care of. The entire medical team took the time to answer my questions and discuss my concerns. Prof. Schenker himself was extremely professional and empathetic. He explained the planned operation, the risks and the expected course in understandable terms. This helped me to better prepare for the operation and alleviate my fears.

The operation itself went smoothly and without complications. Prof. Schenker and his team showed a high level of expertise and precision throughout the procedure. I felt in safe hands throughout.

After the operation, I was carefully monitored and received first-class post-operative care. The nursing staff were friendly, attentive and always ready to meet my needs. Prof Schenker visited me personally to check on progress and discuss further steps.

The recovery time was faster than expected and I am overjoyed with the results of the surgery. Prof. Schenker and the whole team really did a first-class job and I now feel healthier and happier than ever before.

But in urology a patient with blood in her urine and urination problems was insufficiently examined. The doctor mentioned possible bladder cancer, but no further diagnostics were carried out. A few months later bladder cancer was diagnosed and surgery was performed at another clinic.

There were also serious problems with service, waiting times and inefficient staff work in emergency situations.

From the moment I made an appointment, I was treated in a friendly and alert manner. The staff at the international office were very helpful and assisted me with all administrative matters.

I was looked after by a highly skilled team of doctors and nurses during the examination. They took ample time to gather my medical history and performed a thorough examination. The medical equipment and facilities at the Solingen Clinic are impressive. Everything is clean, modern and well organised, which creates a pleasant atmosphere.

After the examination I received a detailed report with all results and recommendations. The report was well structured and helped me to better understand my health condition and take the necessary measures.

My wife and I went for a check-up at the Solingen City Clinic, just when we were traveling in Germany, we were advised by friends to go to the clinic for a health check-up. Of course, I am not a fan of this kind of pastime, as I associate hospitals and tests with unpleasant feelings, but my wife insisted and we signed up for a check-up. It all took 2 days and I was very pleasantly surprised how quickly, qualitatively and painlessly all the tests and examinations were done, especially the gastroscopy. The results were emailed to us as we could no longer stay at the clinic.
