Diagnosis: Kidney surgery

I have had kidney problems since childhood. When I turned 25, doctors strongly recommended that I remove the kidney and look for a donor to transplant a new one. But in Germany, it turned out that a simple operation was needed to expand one of the channels. The operation was under general anesthesia. After her, two small holes remained on her stomach and back, which are now not to be found.

An  operation was easy and painless, on the second day the wife began to get out of bed, and on the third day she was already walking around the clinic. Many thanks to the German doctors for this!

Diagnosis: Oncology

My husband has cancer. He was treated in Ukraine, but there was no result. We arrived at the Essen clinic, where all the examinations were quickly carried out, according to the results of which therapy was recommended. Although in Ukraine doctors could not find a treatment for Boris, in Germany, on the contrary, it was said that it was even good that the tumor was endocrine-dependent, because it is controlled by special hormonal preparations. To tell the truth, the drugs will need to be taken during the life – once every 4 weeks.
The clinic has a very attentive attitude of all medical staff and the professor himself – the head physician. Patients are monitored at a very high level.

Diagnosis: Knee injury

The next day after our arrival, an appointment at the clinic and a preoperative examination took place. My brother and I were operated on the same day – we asked for this in advance in order to be discharged from the clinic at the same time.
We were very pleased with the clinic and the doctor who operated on us.

Clinic on the map
What treatment is offered at the Essen Clinic for patients with an oncological diagnosis?

Surgical treatment of oncology at the Essen ClinicEssen University Hospital is recognized as one of the leaders in the field of oncology in Germany and the world. The West German Cancer Center (WTZ) is based in the hospital. Leading specialists in surgery, radiology, immunology, and hematology work here. Doctors develop and implement new methods of cancer treatment based on molecular diagnostics.

Doctors of different specialities make up an individual treatment regimen for each patient. The hospital widely uses multimodal therapy. This is a combination therapy that may include several methods. It is aimed at an effective result that increases the patient’s chances for remission and reduces the risk of metastases and possible relapse.

Among the primary cancer treatment technologies at Essen Hospital:

1. Surgical treatment. Perform mainly minimally invasive organ-preserving operations. Use of robotic surgery. This minimizes tissue injury and speeds up patient recovery. For example, surgery for stomach cancer involves the removal of part of the stomach, depending on the stage and extent of the tumour. It may be accompanied by radiation chemotherapy to increase the patient’s chances of recovery. Chemotherapists and radiologists take part in the treatment. The success of the operation in the Essen clinic is over 96%.

2. Stem cell transplantation. An effective method for treating leukemia, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, and neuroblastoma. Bone marrow transplantation is available from the patient himself (autologous) and from a donor (allogenic).

3. Radiation therapy. The centre is equipped with three modern linear accelerators of different power. Conducted here:

  • three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3-D CRT);
  • image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT);
  • radiation therapy with intensity modulation (IMRT).

4. Proton therapy. This is an advanced technology that is available in some clinics in Europe. Allows precise irradiation of the tumour with protons and ions without damaging adjacent tissues. It is especially indicated in the absence of response to radiation or chemotherapy, as well as for the treatment of children. It has fewer side effects than traditional radiation therapy as it preserves the surrounding tissue. The Essen Clinic cooperates with the WPE Proton Therapy Center.

5. Chemotherapy. They use European ESMO protocols to prescribe maintenance drugs that reduce side effects.

6. Brachytherapy. This is a contact radiation therapy in which a small radioactive source is placed inside or near the tumour. It allows doctors to use the maximum dose to irradiate the internal organs’ tumour accurately.

7. Targeted therapy. They use drugs that target cancer cells, inhibiting their growth and division. Targeted therapy is less toxic compared to chemotherapy.

Why do patients choose the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Essen Clinic?

Robotic cardiac surgery at the Essen ClinicThe Center for Cardiac Surgery provides comprehensive medical care for cardiovascular disease. The centre is equipped with hybrid operating rooms for endovascular interventions. Cardiac surgeons at the Essen Hospital specialize in minimally invasive procedures: 95% of all surgeries are performed in a low-traumatic manner under image guidance.

The most popular are endovascular (catheter) and endoscopic techniques. Some interventions are performed using the Da Vinci robotic system. Doctors pay special attention to stenting, vascular prosthetics, and the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency. The treatment regimen for each patient is compiled by a team of specialists, which includes cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, angiologists, and arrhythmologists. This allows doctors to treat even the most complex cases successfully.

Foreign patients are in demand of the following treatment methods:

  • radiofrequency ablation of arrhythmogenic foci;
  • stenting of coronary vessels;
  • coronary artery bypass grafting;
  • catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI);
  • mitral valve reconstruction (MitraClip and PASCAL);
  • implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators;
  • percutaneous angioplasty;
  • treatment of congenital heart defects, including endovascular occlusion of ventricular and atrial septal defects;
  • removal of heart tumours.

According to Essen, the success rate of heart surgery reaches 99% (these figures exceed the German average).

The Essen Clinic conducts scientific research on the molecular basis of heart and vascular diseases and develops new methods for their therapy.

What surgeries are performed in the department of abdominal surgery at the Essen Clinic?

Transplantation in Essen: kidney and liver transplantEssen University Hospital has modern medical equipment for surgical treatment of all diseases, including the most complex ones. The clinic’s surgeons are recognized as experts in general, abdominal, thoracic, and transplant surgery.

They perform the following surgeries:

  1. Whipple operation. It is a complex procedure that requires great skill from the surgeon. Therefore, it is not available in all clinics. It is indicated for cancer of the pancreas, bile ducts, and intestines. During the procedure, the doctor removes part of the pancreas, duodenum, gallbladder, part of the stomach, and the common bile duct. The success rate of the intervention at the Essen Clinic is 97%.
  2. Esophagectomy is the removal of part or all of the oesophagus. It is carried out with cancer of the oesophagus and severe reflux esophagitis. Essen surgeons perform the procedure with a predominantly minimally invasive endoscopic technique.
  3. Kidney transplant. It is indicated in the terminal stage of chronic renal failure. It allows doctors to improve patients’ quality of life and save them from the need for dialysis. They performed endoscopically. The success rate of a kidney transplant in Essen is 99%.
  4. Liver transplant. Perform with cirrhosis, liver cancer, and acute liver failure. Using a Da Vinci robotic system. 90% of liver transplants in Essen are successful.

For foreign patients in Essen, kidney and liver transplantation is available only from related donors.
