Aplastic Anemia Treatment in Israel

We help you choose a hematology department in Israel to confirm the diagnosis of aplastic anemia, receive immunosuppressive therapy or undergo a bone marrow transplant. Hematologists first study your blood tests and bone marrow biopsy.

  • 12,000+ patients since 2016
  • No mark-up: you pay the clinic directly
  • Coordinating doctor 7 days a week

The essentials

Aplastic anemia is a disease in which the bone marrow almost stops producing blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. This leads to weakness, bleeding, bruising and frequent infections. Most often the cause is that the immune system mistakenly damages the stem cells of the bone marrow, and less often the disease is inherited.

Aplastic anemia treatment in Israel is provided by hematologists and bone marrow transplant specialists. The choice between a bone marrow transplant and immunosuppressive therapy depends on the severity of the disease, the patient's age and whether a matched donor is available. We help you get the opinion of Israeli hematologists before the trip and compare clinic programs.

How treatment can help

  • Restore blood cell productionA bone marrow transplant from a matched donor replaces the damaged stem cells with healthy ones.
  • Stop the immune attackImmunosuppressive therapy suppresses the cells that destroy the bone marrow and allows it to recover.
  • Reduce risks until treatment worksTransfusions, infection prevention and iron control help the patient wait for the therapy to take effect.

The outcome depends on the severity of the disease, age, donor compatibility and general condition. The method is chosen by a hematologist after examination.

When to ask for a review

  • The diagnosis was made by bone marrow biopsyand a treatment plan is needed
  • All blood cell counts are lowand the diagnosis has not yet been confirmed
  • You need a second opinionbefore a transplant or immunosuppression
  • Immunosuppressive therapy did not helpor the disease has come back
  • A brother or sister is an HLA matchand you are discussing a bone marrow transplant
  • The patient is a childand an inherited form needs to be ruled out

Not sure which treatment suits your situation? Send your blood tests and bone marrow biopsy report - a hematologist at an Israeli clinic will review them before the trip.

What happens in aplastic anemia

The bone marrow contains stem cells from which all blood cells are formed. In aplastic anemia there are very few of them, and the bone marrow fills with fatty tissue. Blood tests show three values reduced at once: hemoglobin, white blood cells and platelets. This condition is called pancytopenia.

Most often the disease is acquired: it is triggered by a malfunction of the immune system, sometimes after a viral infection, contact with toxic substances or taking certain medicines. Children and young people may have inherited forms, such as Fanconi anemia. These are treated differently, so doctors always try to rule them out.

By severity, aplastic anemia is classified as non-severe, severe and very severe. The degree is determined by the number of neutrophils (cells that protect against bacteria), platelets and reticulocytes (young red blood cells), and the urgency of treatment depends on it. That is why aplastic anemia treatment in Israel always begins with an accurate assessment of severity.

Aplastic anemia diagnosis in Israel

Aplastic anemia diagnosis is needed not only to confirm the disease but also to rule out similar conditions: myelodysplastic syndrome, leukemia, vitamin deficiency. An Israeli clinic usually performs:

  • a detailed blood test with reticulocytes;
  • a trephine biopsy of the bone marrow – taking a small core of bone that shows how many cells it contains;
  • a cytogenetic study of bone marrow cells;
  • flow cytometry for a PNH clone (paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria), which often accompanies aplastic anemia;
  • in young patients, tests for inherited forms, such as chromosome fragility;
  • HLA typing of the patient and their brothers and sisters to find out right away whether there is a matched donor.

If some of the tests have already been done at home, Israeli hematologists study them before the trip and say what needs to be added.

Aplastic anemia treatment methods

Aplastic anemia treatment methods are chosen according to the severity of the disease, age and donor availability.

Bone marrow transplant. The only method that can completely replace the diseased bone marrow. In young patients with a severe form and a matched brother or sister, it is often chosen as the first treatment. If there is no such donor, an unrelated donor is sought or a haploidentical transplant is discussed. More about the procedure itself on the page bone marrow transplantation abroad.

Immunosuppressive therapy. It is used when a transplant is not indicated or there is no suitable donor. Antithymocyte globulin and cyclosporine are usually combined with a drug that stimulates blood cell production. The response is assessed after several months.

The treatment approaches in Israeli clinics follow international hematology guidelines.

Supportive treatment. Transfusions of red blood cells and platelets, prevention and treatment of infections, and removal of excess iron that builds up after repeated transfusions.

Bone marrow transplant for aplastic anemia in Israel

A bone marrow transplant for aplastic anemia takes place in several stages: finding a donor, preparation, or conditioning, which makes room for the new cells, infusion of the donor stem cells and the engraftment period. During this time the patient stays in sterile conditions, because the immune system is almost absent.

According to the programs of Israeli clinics on our website, an allogeneic bone marrow transplant involves a hospital stay of about 90 days, and the total stay in the country may be about 180 days. The exact plan depends on the donor type and how recovery goes. In Israel, such transplants are performed, for example, at Sourasky (Ichilov), Sheba and Schneider Children’s Medical Center. A related topic is leukemia treatment in Israel: the same types of transplantation are described there.

Cost of aplastic anemia treatment in Israel

The cost of aplastic anemia treatment in Israel depends first of all on the method. Immunosuppressive therapy is given in hospital and then on an outpatient basis, while a bone marrow transplant requires several months of follow-up. The total is affected by the search for an unrelated donor, the number of transfusions and the treatment of complications.

We request programs from several clinics after reviewing your records and show you what each one includes. For patients under 18, transplant programs include payment assistance from Experts Medical, and the coordinator will explain the conditions.

Where else to learn about the disease

Clinics in different countries that treat patients with blood disorders can be found in the catalog of oncology clinics. Aplastic anemia treatment in Israel is worth considering if you need transplant experience, confirmation of the diagnosis or a new plan after unsuccessful therapy.

To start aplastic anemia treatment in Israel, submit a request and send your blood tests, bone marrow biopsy report and discharge summaries. The coordinator will pass them on to hematologists, and you will receive the doctors’ opinion and clinic programs.

Frequently asked questions

Can aplastic anemia be cured?
Yes, in many patients blood cell production can be restored. A bone marrow transplant can completely replace the diseased bone marrow, and immunosuppressive therapy leads to a lasting improvement in blood counts in a large proportion of patients.
Who is a bone marrow transplant suitable for?
It is usually considered for young patients with a severe form of the disease, especially if there is a matched brother or sister. If there is no such donor, an unrelated donor is sought in international registries, or a haploidentical transplant from a partially matched relative is discussed.
What is immunosuppressive therapy?
It is treatment with drugs that suppress the excessive activity of the immune system. Most often antithymocyte globulin and cyclosporine are combined with a drug that stimulates blood cell production. The effect develops gradually, over several months.
How much does aplastic anemia treatment in Israel cost?
The cost depends on the method: immunosuppressive therapy and a bone marrow transplant differ in scope and duration. After reviewing your records, we request programs from several clinics. Experts Medical services are free for the patient.
Are children with aplastic anemia treated in Israel?
Yes, children are cared for by pediatric hematologists, for example at Schneider Children's Medical Center. In a child, it is important to rule out inherited forms of the disease, because the choice of treatment and donor depends on it.
Can I travel with a companion?
Yes, it is better to come for aplastic anemia treatment in Israel with someone close to you, and during a bone marrow transplant their presence is especially important. The coordinator will explain how to arrange accommodation for the whole treatment period.

The information on this page is for reference only and is not medical advice. The treatment method is chosen by a specialist after reviewing the patient's medical situation.
