About clinic

Schneider Children's Medical Center is a unique medical institution for Israel and the Middle East. This is a university multidisciplinary clinic known throughout the world for its achievements in the field of pediatrics. Shneider doctors use innovative methods and technologies for treatment. Therefore, they help children with complex surgical cases and rare genetic diseases. Schneider provides all types of highly specialized medical care for children and adolescents (from birth to 18 years).

The main specializations of the centre:

  • hematology, oncology, bone marrow transplantation;
  • organ transplantation;
  • endocrinology and treatment of diabetes mellitus.
  • cardiology and cardiac surgery.

Treatment of Hematological and Oncological Diseases in Schneider

The Center for Hematology and Oncology is considered the leading Israeli children's institution in this area. Pediatric oncohematologists treat children with all forms of leukemia, lymphomas, and solid tumours. Six centre laboratories conduct immunological, cytogenetic, and molecular studies of cancer cells. This allows choosing the most effective treatment protocol with bone marrow transplantation for each child. The Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation in Schneider in 2014 received international JACIE accreditation in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cell therapy. Treatment of oncology in children at the world level in Schneider provides, according to the centre, a complete recovery in 85% of patients.

Saving Children's Lives with Organ Transplantations at Schneider

At the Schneider Organ Transplantation Center, doctors perform the most significant number of pediatric organ transplantations in Israel, including complex and rare surgeries. Every year, on average, doctors perform 40 transplantations. Schneider is the only centre in Israel that performs liver transplantations in children. Hundreds of children have already received a new life after life-saving heart, lung, kidney, liver, and pancreas transplantations at Schneider.

Treatment of Endocrinological Diseases in Schneider

In this specialized department of Schneider, pediatricians treat several complex diseases in children and adolescents:

  • diabetes mellitus;
  • obesity and metabolic disorders;
  • violations of growth and puberty;
  • thyroid disease;
  • disorders of calcium metabolism;
  • hyperlipidemia;
  • diseases of the adrenal glands (including Cushing's syndrome).

Correction of congenital and acquired heart defects in Schneider

Pediatric cardiac surgeons in Schneider perform 500 operations annually, and the most significant number of pediatric diagnostic cardiac catheterizations in Israel is 1,200. Children, after surgical correction of congenital and acquired heart defects, spend an average of only one week in the department.

Features and benefits of treating children in Schneider

While being treated at Schneider, children and adolescents:

  • Receive treatment for all diseases at the level of the highest world standards in pediatrics. Among the doctors, there are many unique specialists and professors of the medical faculty of Tel Aviv University. High-tech methods of diagnostics and therapy, which have no analogues in the world, are available.
  • Specialists perform all procedures considering the characteristics of the child's body and the child's psychology.
  • Children receive more than just interdisciplinary personalized care. A team of specialists works with them and their families to provide comprehensive psychological and social support. These are psychologists, teachers, art therapists, hospital clowns, and
  • The architecture and design of a clinic specially created for children, the arrangement of wards and other premises, and the comfortable stay of children with their parents evoke positive emotions in the child, contributing to recovery and rehabilitation.
  • An interpreter-coordinator works with children and their parents from other countries and helps them complete the course of treatment successfully.

Achievements of Schneider, confirming the world level of the centre

Schneider specialists are the first in Israel and the world:

  • performed endoscopic correction of a cleft larynx in a premature baby weighing 2.5 kg;
  • began to perform video capsule endoscopy in children under 2 years of age;
  • began to correct mitral stenosis under local anesthesia;
  • implanted a defibrillator in a four-month-old baby;
  • performed open heart surgery on an 800-gram premature baby in 2006;
  • put on stream transcatheter implantation of an artificial valve;
  • performed multiple transplantations of a whole complex of organs (small and large intestines, liver, pancreas) in a 16-year-old patient in 2008.

One of Schneider's new achievements was in 2022. Doctors began to use a unique technology in children with diabetes - Medtronic's "artificial pancreas". This high-tech device is implanted in a child and performs an automatic and continuous assessment of blood glucose levels with accurate insulin administration. The development significantly improves the quality of life in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes aged 7 to 18 years.

Which innovative research methods are used at Schneider Children's Hospital?

Research at the Schneider ClinicSchneider is a leader in Israel and the world in the quality and safety of medical care for children and in scientific research in paediatrics. This is confirmed by JCI accreditation, an international organization for assessing the quality and safety of medical institutions.

The hospital uses modern diagnostic methods depending on the age, type, and stage of the disease in a child. Among the most relevant:

  • Analysis for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein the fetus produces during pregnancy. Usually, it is absent in children and adults. Elevated levels of AFP may indicate the presence of hepatoblastoma, a liver tumour in children.
  • Aspiration and/or bone marrow biopsy are procedures in which a small amount of bone marrow is taken from the bone for microscopic examination. This helps to determine the presence and type of leukemia (blood cancer) in children.
  • Imaging studies in Shneider are methods that allow you to get an image of the internal organs and tissues of the child. These include ultrasound, X-ray, CT, MRI, PET, and scintigraphy. These studies help to detect tumours, metastases, congenital heart defects, and other diseases.
  • Fetal echocardiography is an ultrasound examination of the fetal heart, allowing you to detect congenital heart defects early and take appropriate therapeutic measures.
  • Novel gene analysis (SOBP) is a genetic test aimed at identifying the cause of mental retardation in children. This gene was discovered in the Schneider clinic for the first time globally.
  • The CRIT-LINE blood volume monitor is a technology that allows doctors to monitor blood volume in children during hemodialysis. This helps prevent complications associated with changes in blood volume.
What are the advantages of the leukemia treatment in children at the Schneider Clinic?

Leukemia in children is treated at the Schneider Children’s Oncology and Hematology Center, the largest and most modern in Israel. Doctors use effective and safe methods of treatment, which depend on the stage and type of oncological process. Among the most relevant methods are:

  • Chemotherapy at the Schneider ClinicChemotherapy. The Schneider Clinic uses the latest generation of cytostatics to destroy cancer cells or stop their growth. To do this, use injections, tablets, or IV lines.
  • A bone marrow or stem cell transplant is a treatment in which healthy bone marrow is transferred into a child’s body to restore the child’s ability to produce blood. The procedure may be needed after high-dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
  • Targeted Therapy – Treatment targets specific molecules or genes responsible for cancer cells’ development and growth. Targeted therapy may be effective for some types of childhood leukemia, such as chronic myeloid leukemia.
  • Immunotherapy is a treatment that educates a child’s immune system to help it fight cancer cells. This technique is effective in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The chances of recovery in children with leukemia depend on many factors, such as the type and stage of the disease, the age, and the general condition of the child. Early treatment is of particular importance.

Overall, the prognosis for children with leukemia has improved over the past decades thanks to advances in therapy and the expertise of Schneider’s doctors. For example, children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia have a 90% chance of recovery.

How is a bone marrow transplant performed at the Schneider Clinic?

bone marrow transplant at Schneider ClinicA bone marrow transplant at Schneider Clinic transfers healthy hematopoietic cells or hematopoietic stem cells from one body to another to restore or improve bone marrow function.

This procedure is vital for patients suffering from certain forms of blood cancer, inherited hematopoietic disorders, or severe diseases of the immune system.

Transplantation can be autologous (the child’s cells) or allogeneic (donor’s cells).

Bone marrow transplantation at the Schneider Children’s Medical Center consists of several stages:

  • Donor matching is an opportunity to use the help of a relative or unrelated donor from the international registry. The Schneider clinic has its own stem cell bank, facilitating the search for a donor.
  • They were preparing for a transplant. The child is examined and receives chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which destroys abnormal cells and suppresses the immune system. This is necessary to prevent rejection of the transplanted cells.
  • Collection and storage of cells. Bone marrow cells or stem cells are collected from the donor by puncture of the pelvic bones or through a vein after stimulation of stem cell production. These cells are checked for quality and stored under special conditions until transplanted.
  • Cell transplant. The procedure lasts from 30 minutes to several hours. The transplanted cells in the bone marrow begin to produce new blood cells.
  • Recovery after transplant. After the procedure, the child is supervised by doctors and nurses in an isolation room to protect him from infections. The child receives medication to support the immune system and prevent complications. Recovery can take from several weeks to several months.
What kinds of heart surgeries for children are performed at the Shneider Medical Center?

Treatment of congenital and acquired heart defects in children depends on the type, degree, and severity of the pathology. Experts also consider the age and individual characteristics of the child’s body.

Children’s heart surgeries at the Institute of Pediatric Cardiology at the Schneider Clinic are performed in several ways:

  1. heart surgery for children at the Schneider Medical CenterCardiac catheterization. This is a minimally invasive procedure in which special instruments or devices are inserted through a catheter to treat certain heart defects without opening the chest. Cardiac catheterization may close atrial or ventricular septal defects or dilate narrowed valves or vessels. To remove abnormal vascular ligaments or to implant artificial valves. Cardiac catheterization has fewer risks and complications than open heart surgery and requires less recovery time.
  2. Open heart surgery. A more complex surgical intervention in which the surgeon makes an incision in the chest and connects the child to a heart-lung machine. Open heart surgery may be used to correct complex or combined malformations that are not amenable to catheterization or other treatments. Open surgery may involve repairing or replacing valves, septa, vessels, or other heart structures.

Three-dimensional echocardiography controls the quality of surgical intervention at the Schneider clinic. With the help of ultrasound waves, a three-dimensional image of the heart and its structures is created. 3D echocardiography can more accurately determine a heart defect’s size, shape, and position and evaluate the function of the heart valves and ventricles.
