Tahir Ozturk20+years of experience

Memorial Bahçelievler · orthopedics

Tahir Ozturk

Orthopedic traumatologist

Associate professor and orthopedic surgeon who performs height increase surgery. Uses the Ilizarov frame, a magnetic intramedullary nail, the Holyfix and LON methods.

Experience and achievements

Assoc. Prof. Tahir Öztürk is an orthopedic surgeon and traumatologist at Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital in Istanbul. He treats sports injuries and knee, shoulder and hip problems, performs joint replacement, and carries out limb lengthening and deformity correction surgery. This combination means a patient can see one specialist both for a recent injury and for the consequences of old ones.

Keyhole surgery: arthroscopy

The doctor performs many joint procedures arthroscopically, through small incisions using a camera and miniature instruments:

  • cruciate ligament reconstruction, including multiligament knee injuries;
  • meniscus repair — a technique that preserves the meniscus instead of removing its damaged part;
  • rotator cuff repair and Bankart repair for recurrent shoulder dislocations;
  • hip arthroscopy for impingement syndrome and labral tears.

Limb lengthening: what you should know

Dr. Öztürk is the author of the article on height-increasing surgery on the official Memorial website. He uses four techniques: the Ilizarov frame, the intramedullary magnetic nail, the Holyfix method and LON, which combines an external fixator with an internal nail. According to him:

  • the femur is lengthened by 6–8 cm and the tibia by 5–7 cm; combined, usually by 12–15 cm;
  • the bone is lengthened gradually, about 1 mm per day;
  • surgery takes 3–5 hours, and the average hospital stay is 3–7 days;
  • full recovery takes from 6 months to 1.5 years;
  • the surgery is suitable for adults, usually aged 18–50, with completed bone growth and normal bone density;
  • contraindications include osteoporosis, severe circulatory and blood clotting disorders, and active or chronic infections.

How else the doctor can help

The doctor performs hip and knee replacement for osteoarthritis and treats hallux valgus as well as hand and wrist conditions. He has completed training in microsurgery and hand surgery, the Ilizarov method, arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder, foot and ankle, and AOTrauma courses in fracture treatment. Surgery is not always necessary: his practice also includes conservative treatment.

Submit a request on the Experts Medical website to get a consultation with Assoc. Prof. Tahir Öztürk or to arrange treatment in Istanbul. Methods of limb lengthening in Turkey

The method depends on which bone is lengthened, by how many centimeters and for what reason. In every technique the bone is cut and then gradually pulled apart, and new bone tissue forms in the gap.

Ilizarov frame

external fixator with wires

A circular frame is attached to the leg from the outside and gradually extended. The method is used both for lengthening and for correcting bone deformities.

LON method

external fixator combined with a nail

Lengthening is done with an external frame while a nail is placed inside the bone. Once lengthening is finished, the frame is removed and the nail holds the bone.

PRECICE magnetic nail

lengthening without an external frame

A telescopic nail with a motor is placed inside the bone. It is extended with an external magnetic device, so there is no frame on the leg.

Correction of leg length discrepancy

for medical reasons

Lengthening helps with congenital anomalies, consequences of fractures and deformities that affect walking. The plan is based on a full-length leg X-ray.

Physiotherapy during lengthening

keeps the joints mobile

Exercises start soon after surgery and continue throughout lengthening. They help prevent contractures, that is, restricted movement in the joints.

Monitoring bone healing

regular X-rays

During and after lengthening the doctor follows the formation of new bone on X-rays. They show when the load on the leg can be increased.

Which treatment methods suit your case?

Our doctor-coordinator will review your medical records and find a specialist to assess your treatment options.

COST AND SCOPE OF PROGRAMS

How much does limb lengthening surgery cost in Turkey?

The limb lengthening cost in Turkey depends on the method, the clinic and how many bones are lengthened. These are the starting prices quoted by clinics.

Approximate treatment costs
Treatment / serviceCostWhat affects the cost
LON method limb lengtheningfrom $10,000Number of bones, clinic, length of stay
PRECICE system limb lengtheningfrom $35,000Number of nails, amount of lengthening, clinic

What the program may include

  • Consultation and examinations
  • Surgery and hospital stay
  • Device adjustment during lengthening
  • Physiotherapy
  • Follow-up X-rays

The doctor decides which stages are needed. The clinic confirms the list of included services and the final cost in a personalized estimate.

Prices are approximate. The final cost depends on your personalized treatment plan and the services included.

What affects the cost

The treatment method and extent, the chosen clinic, the length of hospital stay and the need for additional tests.

Which medical expenses to check

Tests, doctors' fees, inpatient stay, medication and follow-up consultations. What is included depends on the program.

Which travel expenses to plan for

Examinations before limb lengthening

Before drawing up a treatment plan, doctors review the tests you have already had and decide whether additional ones are needed. Some records can be assessed before you travel.

Which examinations may be needed

The orthopedic surgeon studies a full-length X-ray of the legs to assess the length and alignment of each bone. A CT scan is ordered if needed. Before surgery, general and biochemical blood tests and an ECG are checked.

Bone quality also matters. Osteoporosis, severe circulation and blood clotting disorders and chronic infections are contraindications.

Why motivation is assessed

Cosmetic lengthening is performed only when there are no contraindications and after a thorough assessment of the patient's health and expectations. The doctor explains what gain in height is realistic and how long recovery will take.

What can be assessed before the trip

Based on leg X-rays, tests and medical reports, the surgeon can suggest a method and the amount of lengthening in advance. The clinic then prepares an approximate program and cost estimate.

The final plan is confirmed after an in-person examination at the clinic.

TREATMENT IN DETAIL

Limb lengthening in Turkey in detail

Technologies, indications and stages of treatment.

Limb lengthening in Turkey: what to know in advance

Patients choose limb lengthening in Turkey for leg length discrepancy, consequences of injuries and congenital deformities. There is also cosmetic lengthening, when a person wants to be taller. In both cases this is major orthopedic surgery with a long recovery.

The principle is the same for all techniques. The surgeon cuts the bone and fits a device that gradually pulls it apart. New bone tissue forms in the gap, then it hardens and heals at the new length.

The result depends on the surgeon's experience, the chosen method and how closely the patient follows the recommendations during recovery. Turkish leg lengthening surgery is usually performed in large multidisciplinary hospitals in Istanbul. For leg lengthening, Turkey is often chosen because of this combination of hospital level and price.

Who is a candidate for leg lengthening

Medical indications include congenital leg anomalies, a leg length difference of more than 2 cm, fractures that healed incorrectly and consequences of bone infections. Deformities that affect walking belong here too.

Cosmetic lengthening is performed only on adults whose bone growth is complete, not younger than 18. After 40 bones heal more slowly, so the doctor decides on the upper age limit individually.

Children and teenagers undergo lengthening only for strict medical reasons. Surgeons take care not to damage the bone growth zones.

Methods: Ilizarov, LON and PRECICE

Orthopedic surgeons in Turkey use several techniques. The choice depends on the bone, the desired gain and the budget.

  • The Ilizarov frame is attached to the leg from the outside. It is also suitable for correcting deformities.
  • The LON method combines an external frame and a nail inside the bone. After lengthening the frame is removed earlier than with the classic method.
  • The PRECICE system is a nail with a motor inside the bone, extended with an external magnetic device. There is no frame on the leg.
  • The Holyfix method is used by individual surgeons, and the doctor will explain its features at the consultation.

The best limb lengthening surgery in Turkey is the one that matches your bone structure, goals and health. Internal systems are more comfortable for the patient but cost more and are not available in every clinic.

Turkey leg lengthening surgery cost

The price depends on the method, the clinic and additional services. According to clinics, the LON method limb lengthening cost in Turkey starts at $10,000, and the PRECICE system costs from $35,000. For comparison, such operations cost from $60,000 in Germany and from $75,000 in the USA. The leg lengthening surgery cost in Turkey also depends on whether one or two bones are lengthened.

Some clinics offer packages that include accommodation, transfers, tests and rehabilitation. The clinic prepares an exact estimate after reviewing your X-rays and tests.

How the surgery and lengthening phase go

The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes 3-5 hours. The hospital stay is 3-7 days on average.

A few days later the lengthening phase begins. The device is adjusted every day, and the bone lengthens by about 1 mm a day. One course usually adds 5-8 cm.

The femur is lengthened by 6-8 cm and the tibia by 5-7 cm. Lengthening both usually gives 12-15 cm, but doctors advise against aiming for the maximum.

Turkey leg lengthening surgery before and after

Before surgery the patient goes through a full examination and discusses realistic goals with the surgeon. After the lengthening phase comes consolidation: the new bone strengthens and the load is increased gradually. Throughout this period the patient does physiotherapy and has regular follow-up X-rays.

Walking on crutches is possible within a few weeks. Without support patients usually walk after 3-6 months. Full recovery takes from 6 months to 1.5 years.

Risks and contraindications

Possible complications include infection around the fixator, delayed bone healing, thrombosis and nerve damage. Most of them can be detected and treated in time if the patient follows the recommendations and attends check-ups.

Osteoporosis, severe circulation and blood clotting disorders and active or chronic infections are contraindications. That is why a full examination is done before surgery.

Which method or combination of methods is right for you is decided by a medical board after reviewing your records.
