Bone Cancer Treatment in India

We help you choose a cancer center and an orthopedic oncologist in India for osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, chondrosarcoma and other bone tumors. Doctors first study your scans and biopsy, then you compare clinic programs.

  • 12,000+ patients since 2016
  • No mark-up: you pay the clinic directly
  • Coordinating doctor 7 days a week

The essentials

Bone cancer is a malignant tumor that develops from bone or cartilage tissue. The main types are osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma and chondrosarcoma. Treatment requires the coordinated work of a surgeon, a chemotherapy specialist and a radiation oncologist, as well as experience in operations that preserve the limb.

Bone cancer treatment in India is provided by large private cancer centers with orthopedic oncology, pediatric departments and modern radiation therapy, including proton therapy. Program costs here are, as a rule, lower than in Europe. We help you get the opinion of Indian specialists before the trip, compare clinic programs and organize treatment.

How treatment can help

  • Remove the tumorThe surgeon removes the affected part of the bone with a margin of healthy tissue and, whenever possible, preserves the limb.
  • Rebuild the boneThe defect is filled with an endoprosthesis or a graft to restore support and movement.
  • Reduce the risk of recurrenceChemotherapy and radiation before and after surgery lower the chance of relapse in tumors that respond to them.

The outcome depends on the type of sarcoma, the stage, the location of the tumor and its response to treatment. The plan is set by a tumor board after reviewing the test results.

When to ask for a review

  • A biopsy has confirmed bone sarcomaosteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, chondrosarcoma
  • The treatment budget mattersand you want to compare costs with other countries
  • You have been offered amputationand you want to learn about saving the limb
  • The tumor is close to vital organsand you are discussing proton therapy
  • You need a second opinionbefore surgery or chemotherapy
  • Treatment is needed for a childand you are interested in pediatric cancer centers

Not sure which treatment is possible in your situation? Send your scans and biopsy report - an oncologist at an Indian clinic will review them before the trip.

Types of bone cancer

Primary bone cancer is a rare disease. Much more often, metastases of other tumors are found in the bones, and then treatment is built around the main diagnosis. If the tumor has grown from the bone itself, doctors determine its type: osteosarcoma is more common in teenagers and young adults, Ewing sarcoma in children and young people, and chondrosarcoma in adults over 40. More about Ewing sarcoma on the page Ewing sarcoma treatment.

The type of tumor determines whether treatment starts with chemotherapy or surgery and whether radiation therapy is needed.

Bone cancer diagnosis in India

Bone cancer diagnosis in India begins with a review of what has already been done at home. The oncologist looks at the images on the disc and decides what information is missing. The plan usually requires an MRI of the whole affected bone, a chest CT, because the lungs are a common site of metastases in sarcomas, and PET-CT or a bone scan (a test that shows lesions in all the bones).

The key test is the biopsy. With sarcoma, it is better to have it at the center where the surgery will take place: the surgeon chooses the needle path so that it does not interfere with the future operation. If a biopsy has already been done, the Indian clinic reviews the slides and blocks in its own laboratory. As a rule, there is no need to repeat all the tests if they are recent and of good quality.

Bone cancer treatment methods in India

Bone cancer treatment methods in India follow international protocols and are chosen by a tumor board.

Surgery. This is the main method for most bone sarcomas. If blood vessels and nerves are not involved, limb-sparing surgery is performed: the tumor is removed with a margin of healthy tissue, and the defect is filled with an endoprosthesis or a graft. Amputation is considered when it is impossible to preserve the function of the limb.

Chemotherapy. In osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma, it is given before and after surgery. Based on how the tumor responded to the first cycles, doctors adjust further treatment.

Radiation therapy. It is needed in Ewing sarcoma and in tumors that cannot be removed completely. Large Indian centers use high-precision techniques such as IMRT. For tumors close to vital organs and in children, proton therapy is discussed: in India it is provided, for example, at the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre.

Targeted therapy and immunotherapy are used only to a limited extent in bone sarcomas, mainly for relapse. The decision is made by an oncologist.

Bone cancer treatment cost in India

The cost of bone cancer treatment in India depends on the type of tumor, the extent of surgery and the number of cycles. Guidelines based on clinic data collected in an article on our website:

  • removal of a bone tumor or limb-sparing surgery – 7,500-12,000 USD;
  • reconstructive surgery after tumor removal – 10,000-14,000 USD;
  • chemotherapy – from 500 USD per cycle, and under Ewing sarcoma protocols for children about 2,500-3,800 USD per cycle;
  • a course of standard radiation therapy – 6,100-7,600 USD, IMRT – 4,000-5,800 USD.

These are guidelines, not the final price. After reviewing your records, we request programs from several clinics and show you what each one includes. A detailed overview is in the article best hospitals and doctors for bone cancer in India.

Where bone cancer is treated in India

Bone cancer in India is treated in large private hospital networks and multidisciplinary hospitals. Our website features, for example, Apollo and the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, Medanta, Max Healthcare, Manipal, Artemis, BLK-Max and Amrita. Children with bone tumors are accepted by the Rainbow Children’s Hospital network. An overview of the country’s cancer centers is in the article top 5 clinics in India for cancer treatment.

When choosing a clinic, it matters how often it operates on bone sarcomas in particular and whether it has a pediatric department if a child needs treatment. The coordinator clarifies these questions before sending you a program.

How bone cancer treatment in India is organized

Treatment begins with a remote assessment: an oncologist studies the scans and biopsy and proposes a plan. After that, the clinic issues an invitation for a medical visa, and the coordinator helps with flights, transfers and accommodation. Doctors communicate with patients in English and arrange interpreters when needed.

After treatment, the clinic provides a discharge summary with a follow-up plan: images of the operated area and lung CT scans at the set intervals. Part of the follow-up can be done at home. If you are comparing destinations, there is a page on bone cancer treatment in Turkey.

How to start treatment

To start bone cancer treatment in India, submit a request and send your scans, biopsy report and discharge summaries. The coordinator will pass them on to oncologists, you will receive the doctors’ opinion and clinic programs, and then you will choose an option.
