Dr. Gerardo Conesa Bertran’s research focuses on making brain surgery more precise and safer. He studies methods that allow surgeons to visualize the tumor and speech and motor areas before surgery and monitor critical functions during the procedure.

• Functional brain mapping. Correlation of functional MRI, the Wada test, magnetic stimulation, and direct electrical stimulation to identify speech and motor areas.
• Project Sylvius. Development of a three-dimensional virtual- and augmented-reality platform for planning tumor removal and electrode placement in epilepsy.
• Epilepsy surgery. Research into methods for locating seizure onset using stereo-EEG, PET, and other neuroimaging techniques.
• Neuro-oncology. Study of surgery for tumors in functionally important brain regions using awake procedures, neuronavigation, and tractography.
• Deep brain stimulation. Participation in neuromodulation research for severe conditions resistant to standard treatment.

The doctor taught neurosurgery at the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, trained resident physicians, and participated in international research projects.
