About clinic

University Hospital Leipzig is one of the largest and oldest multidisciplinary hospitals in East Germany. This is the clinical base of the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig and a major research center.

In 2021, FOCUS magazine placed this clinic in 6th place in its ranking of “Best Clinics in Germany”. In 2023, doctors from this clinic were included in the FOCUS Top German Doctors list in 66 out of 124 categories. Of these, 11 are professors-oncologists.

University Hospital Leipzig is known in Europe as a center of excellence in academic medicine, which uses innovative methods of treatment and the latest scientific developments in all areas of medicine.

What is treated in University Hospital Leipzig

This academic hospital provides a full range of specialized medical care, with the exception of cardiac surgery and pediatric cardiology. The clinic has 61 departments and 35 operating rooms, 900 doctors work here. At University Hospital Leipzig, every year 50,000 patients receive inpatient treatment and 300,000 receive outpatient care.

Foreign patients most often receive treatment in the following units:

  • University Cancer Center Leipzig;
  • Hematology and Cell Therapy Clinic;
  • Orthopedics and Endoprosthesis Replacement Center;
  • Neurosurgery Clinic;
  • Center for Cochlear Implantation Leipzig;
  • Center for Rare Diseases;
  • Clinic for General, Transplantation, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery;
  • Interventional Cardiology Department.

Most foreigners come for treatment from neighboring European countries, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine.

Cancer treatment in the University Cancer Center Leipzig

This large cancer center, which was certified by the German Cancer Society in 2015, treats all types of cancer, including cancer of unknown primary site (CUP) and rare malignant tumors.

Each type of cancer is treated by a specialized team of oncologists in the respective specialized department. Oncologists use advanced hybrid imaging methods:

  • PET-CT (positron emission computed tomography);
  • PET-MRI (positron emission magnetic resonance imaging);
  • SPECT-CT (single photon emission computed tomography).

These informative and gentle examinations are carried out to clarify the stage of the cancer, plan radiation therapy, and evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. Treatment protocols are developed by an interdisciplinary board, which includes leading experts in each type of cancer treatment.

The therapy includes advanced and innovative treatments:

  • minimally invasive tumor surgery, including robotic surgery for the initial stages of some types of cancer;
  • radiotherapy using innovative radiation technologies, including intensity modulated (IMRT), intraoperative and selective internal radiation (SIRT), and radionuclide therapy;
  • targeted and immune therapy, cell therapy, and high-dose polychemotherapy with stem cell transplantation.

All patients with oncology receive specialized psychological assistance and professional care.

TCM and cell therapy at University Hospital Leipzig

Since 1980, the hospital has performed all options for autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and stem cells. Since 2009, the Cell Therapy Department has been internationally certified by EBMT.

University Hospital Leipzig has a long history of successful cooperation with donor registries in Germany and around the world. All patients, in the absence of a related donor, are matched with a donor or donor cell material using these registries.

Before BMT from unrelated donors and partially compatible related donors, a special procedure is performed. It is called depletion (selection) of certain types of T-cells, which guarantees engraftment of the bone marrow. In addition to TCM, innovative therapy with CAR-T cells is being carried out.

The department has extensive experience in conducting successful stem cell transplantations in elderly patients who cannot be fully prepared for standard BMT. In these difficult cases, University Hospital Leipzig gives them a chance for a cure.

Cochlear Implantation in University Hospital Leipzig

In the ENT clinic of University Hospital Leipzig, there is a specialized Cochlear Implantation Center, which has been approved by the corresponding German certification TÜV Thüringen. Here, adults and children with congenital and acquired deafness who are not helped by a hearing aid are restored to hearing with the help of an artificial implant. The implantation of electronic hearing prostheses in the inner ear is on stream, so the success rate of operations is, according to the clinic, more than 90%.

Also, in the Cochlear Implantation Center, after surgery, you can pass various outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation programs. They are aimed at the complete restoration of hearing and speech. It is designed for children of all ages and adults, including people with severe comorbidities and cognitive impairment. They involve many specialists including otolaryngologists, audiologists, speech therapists, psychologists, and technologists.

If you are interested in this particular clinic, leave a request on the Experts Medical website. You will be contacted by a coordinating doctor who will provide complete information about the treatment at University Hospital Leipzig and fully organize the trip.

Diagnosis: Corneal diseases

I was hospitalized for two weeks. After the operation (cornea transplantation), during which I was provided with excellent medical care, the nurses came to give me eye drops and were always available if I had any difficulties. Service, food, everything was very good and elegant.
