About clinic

DHZB Heart Center in Berlin is one of the leading clinics not only in Germany but also in Europe. It is a medical and research center specializing in the study and treatment of pathologies of the cardiovascular system in various age groups.

The clinic has 166 beds for patients requiring inpatient treatment, including 50 beds in the intensive care unit. The medical center employs 400 medical specialists, including 190 qualified doctors. Of these, 11 are professors and 19 are associate professors.

There are four main departments in the structure of the clinic:

  1. Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.
  2. Department of Cardiology.
  3. Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Diseases.
  4. Department of Anesthesiology.

The clinic has seven modern operating rooms, including those for emergency surgery.

According to the rating published by Focus magazine, DHZB is included in the list of leading German clinics specializing in the treatment of pathological processes of the heart and blood vessels.

The medical center annually receives about 22,000 patients, of which about 8,000 people receive inpatient treatment.

Specialists perform more than 3,000 open heart surgeries, 2,000 minimally invasive procedures, 600 surgical interventions for heart disease, and over 100 heart or lung transplants per year. In addition, doctors perform more than 300 artificial heart implants every year.

According to Newsweek US magazine, DHZB is one of the leaders in Europe in the number of heart and lung transplantations in children, including newborns. The clinic is also the first institution in the world for the development and practical application of artificial blood circulation systems of various modifications.

Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Center

The clinic is equipped with innovative equipment and instruments for complex surgical interventions on the heart and blood vessels.

The director of the clinic is Professor Volmark Falk, a world specialist in minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

DHZB provides the following services:

  • Pontage aorto-coronarien (PAC). A surgical procedure is performed both with and without the use of an AIC (artificial circulation) machine. The hybrid technique that combines surgical bypass surgery and stenting of the coronary arteries is also used in the clinic.
  • Valve replacement or reconstruction. Specialists of the Cardiology Center use minimally invasive techniques and robotic techniques.
  • Heart or lung transplantation. The operation requires highly qualified surgeons and anesthesiologists, as well as complex preparation and rehabilitation of the patient. DHZB is one of the leaders in Europe in terms of the number of heart and lung transplants performed, in particular in children.

Surgery for congenital defects in the structure of the myocardium and large vessels. Leading cardiac surgeons of the clinic perform surgery on both newborns and older children or adults.

 

Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Diseases

Professional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, resuscitators, cardiologists, who regularly improve their qualifications and participate in scientific research, work in DHZB.

The head of the department is Professor Felix Berger, a well-known specialist in pediatric cardiology.

The department of the German Heart Center in Berlin provides the following services:

  • Diagnosis of congenital heart defects in fetuses, newborns, children, and adults using echocardiography, electrocardiography, chest x-ray, CT, MRI, catheterization, and other methods.
  • Treatment of congenital heart defects in fetuses, newborns, children, and adults using surgical or catheter methods. The department performs open-heart surgeries using a heart-lung machine, interventions without the use of AIC, and minimally invasive surgeries through miniature incisions. Doctors also use catheter therapies, such as the closure of ventricular or atrial septal defects, widening of aortic or pulmonary artery stenosis, implantation of valves or stents, and other procedures.
  • Heart or lung transplantation in children and adults with severe heart or lung failure.
  • Treatment of rhythm disturbances in children and adults with medical therapy, electrical cardioversion, radiofrequency ablation, implantation of pacemakers, and defibrillators. The department has a modern electrophysiology laboratory, where complex procedures are carried out to restore normal heart rhythm.
  • Treatment of congenital or acquired lung disease in children and adults with bronchoscopy, laser therapy, balloon dilatation, stenting, or surgery. DHZB deals with the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension in children and adults.
