About clinic

MedAustron Clinic is an Austrian center for radiotherapy. It has been operating since 2016 in the small town of Wiener Neustadt near Vienna. The clinic is ISO 9001 accredited. MedAustron is a unique medical institution where cancer patients can receive innovative types of radiation therapy.

The medical center specializes in proton and ion-carbon radiation therapy. It is the only one in Austria and one of the 6 clinics in the world with such a specialization. The equipment for this type of therapy is expensive, so this treatment is available in a few medical centers in the world. MedAustron has the capacity to see 1,000 international patients annually.

The center is headed by the world's leading oncologist-radiologist, Professor Eugen Hug. The doctor worked at the University of Zurich and headed the Paul Scherrer Institute for Protons in Switzerland. He specializes in the treatment of malignant neoplasms in children. As well, he is an author of numerous scientific publications.

Structure of MedAustron

The building was designed to the exacting standards of Forster Sandwich Construction. In order to protect patients and staff from exposure to radiation, the construction of the center took into account technical safety requirements.

250 highly specialized specialists from 18 countries are employed in the clinic. Among them are medical physicists, radiation oncologists, and radiological technologists. The hospital is equipped with 3 treatment rooms:

  • with a horizontal fixed emitter;
  • with a movable emitter, gantry;
  • with vertical and horizontal fixed emitters.

All treatment rooms are equipped with special robotic units. They are used to properly fix the patient during the session.

The clinic features a Research Institute, which conducts research in the field of radiation oncology.

The specialists of the center cooperate with the leading institutes of Austria. There is also a children's section, equipped and designed to suit the needs of the child.

Possibilities of Proton Therapy

The main difference between the treatment of oncological diseases with protons and the traditional beam is that proton beams irradiate only the affected area.

Treatment with protons and carbon ions is most effective for tumors that are located close to vital organs. For example, in the eyeball, brain and spinal cord, base of the skull, mammary gland, spine, gastrointestinal tract, and prostate gland.

Radioactive radiation, passing through the patient's body, acts exactly on the tumor. At the same time, healthy tissues and organs are not damaged. After this procedure, the risk of complications is minimal.

It is necessary to come to MedAustron in the following cases:

  • malignant tumors resistant to conventional radiation therapy;
  • a relapse after radiation therapy, but not earlier than after 1 year;
  • deeply located static primary tumors;
  • pediatric oncology, including neoplasms of the brain, rhabdomyosarcomas, lymphomas, Ewing's sarcomas, etc.

In general, therapy in the clinic is suitable for all patients who are indicated for radiotherapy. Treatment with protons and carbons has the following features:

  • it is recommended for malignant tumors without metastases;
  • an additional option for cancer treatment;
  • it does not replace chemotherapy or surgery.

Proton therapy sessions are carried out daily according to an individual scheme. The duration of the course is determined by the doctor. MedAustron has an outpatient treatment system only.

Technical equipment of MedAustron Clinic

MedAustron Clinic is equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment.

The following settings are available for patients for diagnosis and treatment:

  1. The latest generation Apparatus for MRI and CT from Phillips. They allow to determine the location and size of the tumor and the presence of metastases with an accuracy of 100%.
  2. Imaging Ring from medPhoton. It displays images in real-time during the session, which allows to optimize settings and treatment parameters.
  3. Reutlingen BEC GmbH “exacure” installation. It adjusts the proton beam for maximum precision and beam efficiency.
  4. Varian ProBeam Synchrotron. It plays a key role in proton healing. It is a source of high-energy protons that are used to affect the tumor. It accelerates protons and carbon ions to ⅔ the speed of light.
  5. Varian TrueBeam Installation. It is used for intensive modulation radiation therapy. It delivers high-precision radiation to malignant tumors using a variety of methods, including intense beam modulation and reverse layout.
  6. CyberKnife system. It allows for a precise impact on the tumor without affecting the surrounding tissue.

Currently, the clinic is installing new systems to expand the range of diseases for therapy and make it more accessible.

Diagnosis: brain tumor

Our daughter was irradiated at MedAustron for 6 weeks due to a brain tumor. Already when you enter the institute, you feel yourself in
safety and, as paradoxical as it sounds, comfortable. The clinic is new, clean, and bright. All staff is very friendly and helpful.
Even if we had to wait up to 3 hours from time to time, everything was not so bad, because we were told why and how long it would take.

Diagnosis: chordoma

It looks more like NASA than a treatment center. I have been treating chordoma for 1.5 months. All the staff are very caring and polite. Doctors provide you with all kinds of explanations and support. An excellent institution.

Diagnosis: oncology

I want to take this opportunity to say thanks once again. Everyone is trying very hard and in a very positive mood, trying to do everything the best, and from them, you are charged with this positivity and believe that everything will be fine. It’s great when a doctor takes the time and always explains everything in detail, politely, and with some passion and pure optimism.
I wish the MedAustron team all the best and above all that they can help many patients. Thank you for your dedication and great support.

Diagnosis: cancer

Unfortunately, we went to Austria as a family not for rest, but for treatment. The child was diagnosed with cancer. This center was recommended to us by the attending physician from Ukraine, for which we many thanks. Our little girl was treated with proton therapy. She wasn’t scared and she wasn’t in pain. And that’s why it’s worth visiting this place. The child smiles again and enjoys life. Now the disease has receded. I hope next time we will go to Austria as tourists.

Diagnosis: breast cancer

I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and every day my condition got worse. After I was diagnosed, I was immediately sent for surgery. But it didn’t get any better, because two months later I had a relapse. After the treatment did not help me, I gave up. But a co-worker at work shared the experience of her sister, who was being treated at MedAustron. I decided to take a chance and went to Austria. I was met there at the airport and taken to the hospital. There I had an examination and talked to an oncologist. After 3 days I was treated. There were no side effects, everything went quickly and painlessly. I am at home, regularly undergoing examinations to control my disease. I am grateful to my colleague and the doctors of the center.
