Professor Hakan Agir is a specialist in maxillofacial, reconstructive, and plastic surgery. The doctor sees patients at the Turkish medical center Acibadem Hospitals Group. Maria Chabdaeva, director of the international company Experts Medical, visited the clinic to meet one of Turkey's most renowned physicians.

In 2021, Hakan Agir visited Ukraine. Media outlets published articles about how the doctor performed 15 free surgeries for children over five days at a hospital in Lviv. These were successful surgical interventions for vascular malformations and other congenital facial defects.

Dr. Agir has been practicing medicine since 1996. In addition to Turkish medical centers, he has worked in clinics in Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan. The professor is a member of American and European associations of plastic surgeons.

  • Dr. Agir, which surgical procedures are you specialized in?

I am a plastic surgeon specializing in procedures involving the face and neck, as well as surgical treatment of malignant tumors. I am also a reconstructive surgeon. I perform numerous surgeries to correct cleft lip and repair cleft palate, which are quite common in Eastern European countries.

Additionally, I perform surgeries for skin cancer, oral cancer, tongue cancer, and cancers affecting any part of the face. I specialize in complex reconstructive procedures and carry out microsurgical interventions, which are not uncommon in countries such as Ukraine or Kazakhstan.

On Pediatric Plastic Surgery

  • At what age can cleft lip correction surgery be performed?

For congenital conditions such as birthmarks, cleft lip, and finger defects, we prefer to perform the first surgeries at the age of 3 months. For other cases, such as cleft palate reconstruction, the optimal age is 9–12 months. However, I usually perform these surgeries earlier to achieve better speech development outcomes in children.

I perform cleft lip reconstruction in children at 3–4 months of age. This approach at our clinic provides excellent aesthetic results on the face.

  • Is one surgery sufficient for cleft lip?

If a child has both cleft lip and cleft palate, we operate on the lip first, followed by palate reconstruction. Thus, two surgeries are required before the child reaches one year of age.

Some procedures are performed after the age of 6, such as bone grafting, and sometimes aesthetic correction is needed. This scope of interventions is more suitable for older children.

  • For genetic deformities of the lower jaw, how long should one wait before reconstruction? Is it necessary to wait until jaw growth is complete, or can surgery be performed at an earlier age?

If a child has facial or jaw deformities, we need to observe and examine the patient during the first few months. Diagnostic tests such as MRI and other studies are conducted, after which we develop a treatment plan.

In most cases, we do not operate on the lower jaw bones before the age of 6, unless there are medical indications. For example, if there are breathing or feeding difficulties, or speech problems, we perform surgery earlier.

Oncological Surgeries

  • Regarding oncological treatment, what types of surgeries can you offer? For example, the carotid artery is located in the neck—a very delicate area.

The head and neck is a unique area, a very complex region, as it contains major blood vessels and nerves. A cancerous tumor at an advanced stage spreads to these major vessels and nerves. However, we can perform surgeries under these conditions because we have all the necessary technologies, such as microsurgery and a team-based approach.

Our clinic has handled many such cases. Our doctors have removed tumors previously considered inoperable in Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Romania. We are able to perform these surgeries here because they are complex cases requiring special expertise. We achieve high patient survival rates following surgery.
