Omer Bender (Ömer Bender) is a Turkish Professor of General Surgery and a specialist in breast and endocrine surgery, the founder of clinical ductoscopy (endoscopy of the milk ducts) in Turkey. He sees patients at Vital Fulya Plaza (Şişli, Istanbul) and operates at Medicana Zincirlikuyu Hospital.
Born in 1959 in Trabzon. In 1982 he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Medicine of Istanbul University (Istanbul University, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine). In 1988 he received the title of General Surgery Specialist and was appointed Chief Assistant of the 1st Surgical Clinic of Haseki Hospital. In 1988–1990 he completed his military service as a surgeon at the Ankara Etimesgut 600 Yataklı Hava Hastanesi military hospital.
From 1991 to 2012 he worked at the state hospital Okmeydanı Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi (Istanbul). In 1999 he passed the Turkish Ministry of Health examination for the position of Clinical Chief with the highest score. From 2003 he focused on breast surgery and endocrine surgery. In 2005 he was the first in Turkey to apply ductoscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of pathological nipple discharge, and to date has performed more than 1,500 such procedures. In 2008 he developed the world’s first method of endoscopic papillomectomy — non-surgical endoscopic removal of intraductal papillomas.
In 2009 he received the title of Associate Professor (Doçent) of General Surgery. Since 2012 he has been a faculty member at Istanbul Yeni Yüzyıl Üniversitesi, and in 2015 he received the title of Professor of General Surgery.
Author of more than 130 scientific publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals, including Annals of Surgical Oncology, Surgical Endoscopy, Onkologie, Breast Cancer Research, International Journal of Colorectal Disease, Hellenic Journal of Nuclear Medicine, and Balkan Medical Journal. Since 2009 he has been an invited speaker at the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation’s «International Symposium on the Intraductal Approach to Breast Cancer» (Santa Monica, USA). In 2011 he won 1st place in the scientific research competition of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation with a $20,000 prize (Santa Monica, California, USA).
