Key areas of activity at Asan Medical Center include oncology, cardiology, pediatrics, organ transplantation, endocrinology, urology, gastroenterology, and neurology.
Thanks to its outstanding achievements in healthcare, Asan Hospital has gained wide international recognition. From 2019 to 2024 inclusive, it consistently ranked 22nd in Newsweek’s list of the best hospitals in the world and has been recognized as the most respected hospital in South Korea by KMAC for many years. The hospital has also received numerous awards from national and international organizations.
Asan Hospital has more than 50 specialized medical departments. Below are the most sought-after areas of patient care at the clinic.
The AMC Cancer Institute, opened in 2006, became the first interdisciplinary center in Korea where doctors from various specialties collaborate to develop individualized treatment plans. Its structure includes 17 departments focused on treating specific types of cancer. Patients are managed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiologists, and other specialized doctors. This ensures a comprehensive approach to each patient’s care.
Key achievements of the Cancer Institute at Asan Hospital:
The AMC Heart Institute is a leading center in Korea and one of the largest in Asia for cardiovascular disease treatment. It includes cardiology, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, vascular surgery departments, and eight specialized centers.
At the AMC Heart Institute, the following milestones were first achieved:
The institute’s physicians actively implement minimally invasive and robotic technologies, as well as artificial intelligence. Research results are published in leading medical journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine. The organization for transcatheter cardiovascular therapy recognized the AMC Heart Institute as a leading research institution in cardiovascular medicine.
At the AMC Organ Transplant Center, Korea’s first heart and pancreas transplants were performed, as well as the first living-donor liver transplant. The center performs the highest number of organ transplants in the country and holds a world record for the number of living-donor liver transplants. Success rates of transplants are among the highest globally.
In addition to parenchymal organs (kidneys, liver), tissues are successfully transplanted here, including cornea, bone marrow, bones, blood vessels, cartilage, amnion, and fascia.
The Robotic Surgery Center performs 1,000 surgeries annually using Da Vinci systems. Asan Medical Center has three state-of-the-art robotic installations. Robotic surgeons are widely used in urology, cardiovascular surgery, endocrinology, colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery, liver transplantation, gynecology, pediatric surgery, and otolaryngology. In 2007, Asan Medical Center began performing robot-assisted surgeries for prostate cancer. Today, the hospital performs over 600 such surgeries annually.
The AMC Cell Therapy Center specializes in the use of adult stem cells derived from the patient’s own tissues, eliminating the risk of rejection. These cells are used to regenerate cartilage, bone, muscle, nerve tissue, as well as liver, pancreas, blood vessels, and blood. Research in cell therapy opens up possibilities for treating diseases previously considered difficult to cure.
The center collaborates with FCB-Pharmicell – a biotechnology company with KGMP-certified laboratories, ensuring high standards of research quality and control.
