About clinic

Amrita Hospitals in Kochi, Kerala, is one of the leading private multidisciplinary clinics in Asia. Founded in 1998 under the initiative of spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, the hospital has, over more than a quarter of a century, established itself as a center of advanced medicine, combining innovative technologies with a patient-centered approach.

Amrita offers a wide range of medical services, including cancer treatment, robotic surgery, organ transplantation, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, nuclear medicine, orthopedics, gastroenterology, and nephrology. The clinic continuously develops innovative projects aimed at improving patient outcomes and enhancing the overall quality of healthcare services.

Main Areas of Activity at Amrita Hospitals in India

Amrita Hospitals provides high-quality medical care across more than 80 specialties. Below are the most in-demand areas in more detail.

Robotic Surgery Center

The Robotic Surgery Department at Amrita Hospital was officially inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Kerala in March 2015. Since then, over 3,800 robotic surgeries have been performed here (including approximately 900 in oncogynecology), making the center one of the most experienced in this field in India.

The robot-assisted surgery center was the first hospital in India to perform the highest number of precision robotic liver transplants. In 2017, the first robotic knee and hip replacements in India were performed here.

In neurosurgery, the center performed the first robot-assisted surgery in the Asia-Pacific region using the ROSA system, as well as the first robotic electrode implantation in Asia for deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease.

Epilepsy Treatment Center

Founded in February 2010, the Epilepsy Treatment Center at Amrita Hospital serves patients not only from India but also from around the world, including the Middle East, Africa, Asia Minor, and Southeast Asia.

The center has the country’s largest epilepsy monitoring unit with 15 beds. It features a unique high-density 256-channel EEG system, allowing highly precise monitoring of brain activity—the first such system in India. During its operation, physicians at the center have successfully performed over 1,000 epilepsy surgeries.

An innovative achievement of the department is the introduction of robot-assisted Stereo-EEG, the first procedure of its kind on the continent. This technology enables extremely precise placement of electrodes inside the brain without the need for a craniotomy. The success rate of neurosurgical operations here is 80-90%, significantly exceeding global standards.

Bone Marrow Transplant Center

The center features a fully HEPA-filtered unit. To date, the team has performed 142 bone marrow transplants (74 autologous and 68 allogeneic). The center has become one of the fastest-growing stem cell transplant programs in India.

Achievements include the first haploidentical and unrelated donor transplants in the state. The center has established a dedicated liquid nitrogen stem cell cryopreservation unit. It actively collaborates with the German bone marrow donor center DKMS and DATRI for finding unrelated donors.

Organ Transplant Center

One of the largest organ transplant centers in India. The first transplant—a kidney from a living donor—was performed on September 4, 2001. In 2015, the hospital made history by successfully performing India’s first and second hand transplants.

Amrita Hospitals performs liver, kidney, heart, lung, pancreas, and small intestine transplants. The kidney transplant unit has successfully completed over 800 procedures. In 2014, the center conducted the first simultaneous pancreas transplant, and in 2015, the first small intestine transplant in India.

CyberKnife and TomoTherapy Center

The center is equipped with state-of-the-art radiotherapy equipment. The CyberKnife® M6™ Series provides advanced radiosurgery, allowing higher radiation doses while minimizing side effects.

The TomoTherapy® H™ Series is a modern radiotherapy system that performs a CT scan before each session and accurately targets the tumor. This ensures that only the tumor receives radiation, while healthy tissues are exposed minimally.

Radixact is another radiotherapy system operating on a similar principle. Its advanced CT scanning technology allows reduction of radiation time by 10-30%.

Robotic Joint Replacement Center

At Amrita Hospitals, Mako robotic surgery is used for partial and total knee replacement as well as total hip replacement. Preoperative CT scans create a detailed map of the affected area, assisting precise implant placement. Benefits include smaller incisions, reduced tissue trauma, and faster recovery.

Neurosurgery Center

The department features specialized neurosurgical operating rooms equipped with:

  • Carl Zeiss surgical microscopes;
  • Karl Storz endoscopic brain surgery systems;
  • Stryker high-resolution endoscopic cameras;
  • High-speed pneumatic drill systems Midas Rex and Anspach for precise bone manipulation;
  • Valley Lab Cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator for delicate soft tissue removal.

A major achievement of the center is the ROSA robotic surgical assistant, used for Parkinson’s disease treatment, epilepsy, brain tumors, and diagnostic endoscopy. Compared to traditional surgery, ROSA reduces operating time, invasiveness, tissue trauma, and overall surgical risks.

We had a very good experience at your hospital. The staff were kind, professional, and always ready to help. The doctors explained everything clearly and made us feel comfortable. Nurses were attentive and caring throughout our stay. The hospital was clean and well-maintained. Overall, I felt well taken care of and would definitely recommend this hospital to others.
one thing we felt bad is the room we stayed 2211 was too hot, which made it a bit uncomfortable during our stay. It would be helpful if you plan and change that side non AC rooms into AC rooms it will be good for patients. because of the aluminum sheets roof outside the room and there no other way the air can pass. Whole day the room is very hot due to this. Aside from that, I appreciated the attention and support from the medical team.
Thank you

While Amrita hospital is one of the best hospitals in Kochi, the behavior of some security personnel can be quite rude and unprofessional. As patients and visitors, we deserve to be treated with respect. Additionally, the long waiting times are often frustrating. We kindly request the hospital to improve its management strategies to ensure a more efficient and pleasant experience for all.

I think it is the best hospital in Kerala. Its treatment and other facilities are awesome. The doctors and sisters are very kind and helpful. The surrounding of this hospital is very calm and peace. The sisters in this hospital is like angels from heaven. They are very caring and lovely. We can ask any doubt to the doctors at any time. They will explain it without any hesitation. If you go to this hospital, your all sickness will go.

Clinic: Amrita Hospital
Diagnosis: oncology

Hospital with great infrastructure and poor management. They have got an excellent panel of doctors and a well furnished infrastructure, but those are poorly managed. The hospital is equipped with several departments and a panel of 5 to 10 and more doctors in each department, working with OP and Operation Theatres.

One peculiar thing which I noticed is the double standards the staffs follow welcoming foreign patients; with the luggage trolley and well maintained wheel chairs which native patients aren’t provided with.

The mismanagement causes an unnecessary and extensive delay for which the radiology department is a great example. If you need any of the reports- say X-ray, you need to stand in Queue in front of reports counter, collect the printed receipt from there and pay the bill in payment counter (where people who needs X-ray to be taken are billed), finally come back to reports counter to submit the same printed paper back. This delays not only the people who comes to take report, but the patients who have their X-ray to be taken. This could have been easily avoided by just adding payment facility at the reports counter.

The hospital also doesn’t allow posting multiple bills at the same time and paying it all at once. So if you have more than one OP departments to visit, you need to effectively go to one department, post the bill, pay it in counter and go to the other department and repeat this process.

Wheelchair is another problem which I faced. You need to request wheelchair for each ride (if you don’t have one by your own) from each department you need to visit. The wheelchair person comes with wheelchair, get the patient to the department you need to go, and then goes. You visit doctor in that department, request wheelchair from that department to go to the next department and the cycle continues. You may need to wait 10 to 20 minutes sometimes.

The next hassle comes while purchasing medicines. Once the doctor enters the medicine into the records, you need to visit pharmacist at the front desk, pay the bill there and then head to the pharmacy. The bills of injections are paid on OP counter which need a separate walk, wait and pay.

The nurses are okay, but not that great in terms of behaviour towards patients. The doctors on the other hand does a great job. The front desks of the departments are just okay and sometimes experience difficulty understanding the requirements of patients. I once had to wait for 2 hours, just because the front desk didn’t understand I was required to have blood tested, and a quick message to the doctor for the blood test prescription would have helped me take blood, wait for the result while my turn come.

Was here for cardiac surgery on my father.

Good

  • Mostly service minded staff.
  • Completed the surgery without any complications.
  • Canteens, guest rooms and other required amenities like stores, ATM etc are all available inside the hospital complex.
  • Good car parking space for long term stays are available

Bad

  • Availability of rooms was an issue during initial admission and also when shifting from ICU back to room.
  • Some of the older rooms in the hospital is too small and congested.
  • Guest rooms required better maintenance.
  • Vast areas with different blocks and towers for different departments can be difficult to navigate.
