About clinic

Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch is one of the leading multidisciplinary medical centers in Germany. It specializes in the treatment of oncological, hematological, orthopedic diseases, and neurosurgery.

The hospital is recognized as one of the best cancer treatment facilities and has the status of an Oncology Center. It includes Germany's largest center for the treatment of rare types of bone sarcomas and soft tissue cancer.

The hospital belongs to the large medical network Helios Hospital Group. It offers inpatient and outpatient treatment. The hospital accepts adults and children.

The medical center was opened in 1898 in Berlin.

Oncology treatment at Helios Berlin-Buch

Doctors specialize in the treatment of tumors of the endocrine, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary systems. The treatment protocol is compiled by an interdisciplinary group of doctors (therapists, oncologists, rehabilitation specialists), taking into account the latest achievements in the scientific field.

Effective methods include:

  • intraoperative electronic radiotherapy (IOERT);
  • intra-abdominal hyperthermic chemotherapy (HIPEC);
  • regional deep hyperthermia (RFA);
  • regional aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC);
  • targeted therapy;
  • immune therapy.

All techniques are aimed at the complete destruction of the tumor without damaging healthy tissues.

Oncohematology at Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch

To detect leukemia and other oncohematological pathologies, modern diagnostics is carried out:

  • cytological examination of blood cells;
  • molecular genetic research;
  • immunophenotyping;
  • PET-CT for visualization of pathological foci.

Treatment of patients with hematological diseases is carried out according to modern protocols or using new drug therapy strategies, including:

  • high-dose chemotherapy followed by transplantation of the patient's autologous pluripotent stem cells, which can self-renew;
  • individual and interdisciplinary coordinated radiotherapy procedures;
  • targeted therapy, which involves the administration of drugs to the patient that act in accordance with the genotype of the tumor, recognize cancer cells, and destroy them;
  • CAR-T cell therapy, which involves the genetic reprogramming of immune cells. This treatment offers a chance of recovery for patients with aggressive forms of blood cancer, which do not respond to standard therapy.

One of the priority areas of the hospital is bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Autologous BMT (patient cells) and allogeneic BMT (donor cells) are available here.

Oncologists are developing and conducting clinical trials of new treatments for leukemia, multiple myeloma, and Ewing's sarcoma.

Neurosurgery at Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch

The Department of Neurosurgery is one of the leading departments in the hospital and is part of the Cancer Center. A full range of services is available here, from comprehensive screening to surgery with subsequent rehabilitation.

Doctors focus on microsurgery and minimally invasive techniques. 90% of interventions are performed endovascularly. In general, 500 procedures annually.

Doctors have developed a number of technologies, including:

  1. Treatment of an aortic aneurysm through the abdominal artery using a catheter through which the doctor inserts soft platinum coils.
  2. Minimally invasive treatment of brain tumors with minimal or no incisions.
  3. Removal of pituitary tumors through the nose.
  4. Conservative treatment of degenerative diseases of the spine by injecting the drug into the area around the damaged nerve root under CT guidance.
  5. Surgical treatment of diseases of the spine by methods of stabilization or replacement of the intervertebral disc under the control of a microscope.

The hospital conducts clinical research in the field of neurology, participation in which is available to patients.

Orthopedics and Traumatology

The doctors of Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch specialize in the surgical and conservative treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Among the most requested procedures:

  • arthroscopy is a gentle method for diagnosing and treating joints;
  • hip replacement, which is performed using the AMIS method;
  • replacement of the knee joint using a computer navigation system;
  • treatment of rheumatological diseases: tendon reconstruction, arthroplasty, and other operations to restore limb functions;
  • treatment of bone tumors in osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma.

If necessary, patients undergo rehabilitation according to an individual scheme.

Diagnosis: neurosurgery

There was an online consultation with Professor Kivit. I thank the doctor and translator from the bottom of my heart. The professor reviewed all our documents, explained everything very clearly. He reassured us as parents, and gave recommendations for treatment. Thanks again for helping us!!

Diagnosis: breast cancer

I went to the Helios clinic in Berlin because of breast cancer, which I was diagnosed with at home. I really liked the organization and the completeness of the examination. I also had a consultation with a professor. He is a very nice person, he answered all my questions completely and clearly. I don’t regret that I went to Germany for diagnostics, although it’s expensive, but it’s health!

Diagnosis: childbirth

I gave birth in this clinic on July 22, 2022 and am very satisfied. The midwives, both during the birth and in the ward, were great. They have always been happy and very helpful. I stayed in the hospital for 3 days. I couldn’t have imagined a better attitude and conditions.

Diagnosis: knee revision

I have come here 3 times already for a knee revision. The attitude of doctors and medical staff is always friendly. They smile even when they are stressed. Sometimes I had to wait a long time, but this is a hospital, emergencies always take priority.

Diagnosis: hospital treatment

I am now on my second inpatient treatment in a very short time. And I’m glad I chose this clinic. The doctor at the reception was very friendly, as were the nurses in the ward. And the doctors who treat are very professional. Here I still feel like a person, not just a patient. Doctors consider all questions and problems. In general, everything is very good.

Diagnosis: suspected pneumonia in a child

Today I was with my 2.5-year-old son with suspected pneumonia and a temperature above 39 degrees in the emergency center at Helios Hospital. We didn’t have to wait a minute and we immediately took action to make our child feel better. For this we want to thank you very much! The nurses and the lovely blond doctor were absolutely professional. There was even a big chocolate bunny at the end to take home. Thank you very much!

How does Helios Berlin-Buch Hospital treat patients with blood cancer?

Helios Berlin-Buch Hospital: blood cancerDoctors specialize in the detection and treatment of systemic hematological pathologies, taking into account the latest scientific discoveries. It has everything you need for the complex treatment of such blood diseases:

  • acute myeloid and lymphatic leukemia;
  • Hodgkin’s disease;
  • non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma;
  • myelodysplastic syndromes;
  • multiple myeloma;
  • chronic myeloproliferative diseases.

Doctors conduct a deep examination of the hematopoietic and lymphatic systems and identify the causes of coagulation deviations, for example, venous thromboembolism, and increased bleeding tendency.

Among the diagnostic procedures:

  • cytological examination of blood cells;
  • molecular genetic tests;
  • Immunophenotyping – allows you to identify the difference between the types of cancer cells;
  • bone marrow biopsy;
  • PET-CT.

Patients are treated by an interdisciplinary team of doctors using established or innovative therapeutic strategies:

  1. High-dose chemotherapy with new generation drugs.
  2. Bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Transplantations are carried out from the patient himself and from a related donor. In TCM, hematopoietic healthy stem cells are introduced into the body. To select the most compatible donor, the hospital conducts an additional set of tests. This greatly reduces the risk of rejection.
  3. Radiation therapy with modern installations with a minimum amount of radiation, so that healthy tissues are not affected.
  4. Targeted therapy. They use drugs (monoclonal bodies or inhibitors) that target exclusively cancer cells. Oncohematologists select targeted drugs as accurately as possible, achieving high efficiency of therapy. For this, additional studies are prescribed.
  5. Immunotherapy. These are special drugs aimed at strengthening the body’s resistance in the fight against cancer.
  6. CAR-T cell therapy. This is an innovative type of treatment that is based on the use of immunity. Doctors isolate T-lymphocytes from a patient’s blood, a special type of cell that can fight tumors. They introduce a weak virus and grow genetically modified cells, after which they are returned to the body. After just one CAR-T treatment, the reshaped cells continue to develop in the body and fight cancer for years.

Given the demand for the services of oncohematologists among foreign patients, the department has developed special package offers:

 “Treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma: diagnosis + chemotherapy”;

 “Autologous TCM + consultation”;

 “Allogeneic BMT from an unrelated donor + consultation”.

According to clinic statistics, 90% of adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia achieve complete remission after treatment.

What types of therapies are offered at Helios Clinic Berlin-Buch for patients with cancer?

Helios Berlin-Buch: treatment of patients with oncological diagnosisThe Cancer Center has a full range of modern cancer diagnostics and therapy based on evidence-based medicine and advanced technologies. A team of leading specialists develops a therapy concept for each patient.

Modern treatment options at Helios Berlin-Buch:

  1. Surgical removal of tumors, mainly endoscopically. For precancerous stages in gynecology, conization, and laser treatment are used.
  2. Intraoperative electron radiotherapy (IOELT) – point irradiation with high doses of radiation to cancer cells during surgery.
  3. Intra-abdominal hyperthermic chemotherapy (HIPEC) is the introduction of special drugs into the tumor to destroy it. This procedure is effective for carcinomatosis of the gastrointestinal tract and small pelvis.
  4. Regional deep hyperthermia (RFA) is the destruction of tumor cells by local hyperthermic chemoperfusion (at a temperature of 42-45°C). It is used for cancer of the lungs, liver, and kidneys.
  5. Radioembolization of the liver (SIRT) is a transcatheter injection of radioactive particles into the vessel that feeds the tumor. It is prescribed for liver cancer. The technique allows delivering high doses of radiation directly to the focus, minimizing the radiation load on healthy tissues.
  6. Radioiodine therapy is a treatment with a radioactive isotope of iodine. It is used for thyroid cancer.
  7. Regional aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC). It is performed by spraying special drugs into the abdominal cavity, used for metastases in the internal organs.
  8. Targeted therapy is a treatment with drugs that are aimed at the destruction of pathological cells.
  9. Immunotherapy is a treatment with monoclonal antibodies aimed at finding and fighting cancer cells.
  10. Radiosurgery Cyberknife is a removal of tumor tissue using a focused beam of radiation beams.

  • consequences of a stroke;
  • elimination of vascular anomalies: cavernomas, arteriovenous malformations, aneurysms of cerebral arteries.

Leading European neurosurgeons who have experience in the minimally invasive treatment of pathologies of the brain and spinal cord, including the most complex ones. Among the methods are:

  1. Microneurosurgery. Tumor resections are performed without extensive trepanation under the control of modern operating microscopes with multiple magnifications. The functions of the brain during the intervention of the doctor are controlled using neuromonitoring devices. This allows to react in time and prevent negative consequences.
  2. Awake craniotomy. A complex procedure that involves trepanation of the skull. Some neoplasms of the brain may be located near vital areas. To avoid negative consequences, doctors awaken the patient as soon as they reach an important area. During the intervention, the neurosurgeon and the neurophysiologist contact the patient, checking his reactions. Thanks to this, specialists determine areas that cannot be removed and preserve important functions for the patient.
  3. Stereotactic radiosurgery. It is effective in inoperable brain tumors. Gamma Knife and CyberKnife are used. Previously, surgeons prescribe an MRI or CT scan, after which they create a 3D image of the operated focus. The procedure allows to reduce or even completely remove the pathological focus, which is impossible to remove by conventional surgery, given the high risk of complications.
  4. Transsphenoidal surgery. It is a minimally invasive intervention to remove cysts, adenomas, and other tumors of the pituitary gland. The procedure is carried out transnasally. Patients do not have scars, they recover quickly.

Popular catheter treatments include:

  • transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI);
  • coronary stenting;
  • balloon angioplasty;
  • implantation of pacemakers;
  • transcoronary septal ablation;
  • clipping of valves;
  • closure of the atrial appendage;
  • recanalization of chronic coronary occlusion.

Catheter interventions are performed under local anesthesia, and the risk of postoperative complications is minimal. This is an alternative treatment for patients who are not eligible for open surgery.

  • dynamic interspinous stabilization;
  • posterior lumbar interbody fusion surgery (PLIF);
  • implantation of an artificial disc on the cervical spine.
  1. Periradicular therapy (PRT). It involves the introduction of drugs around the affected nerve root. Therapy is aimed at reducing swelling and pain, improving blood circulation in the nerve. It is performed under CT control.

Surgeons of Helios Berlin-Buch use the latest generation of implants, which are installed and fixed through minimal incisions on the skin under microscope control.
